2008 MD Open Straight Pool Championship and World 14.1 Qualifier Day One Draws to Close

Big Daddy's Owners, Cindy and Rick Molineiro with Tournament Director Peter Burrows
Barouty is top seed in Maryland

The 2008 Maryland Open Straight Pool Championship and World 14.1 Qualifier at Big Daddy's Billiards in Glen Burnie Maryland got underway early this morning and has finally drawn to a close after a full day's worth of great straight pool action.  The top run honor and winner of the Saturday $100 bonus was Danny Barouty at 83, with Bob Maidhof trailing behind with 82 balls.  Other than these two individuals, Bob Chamberlain and Michael Yednak fell in the 65 ball range while the remaining players noted runs in the forties and under.

The day ended with the top two players from each flight progressing into the Sunday battle grounds – the day will start bright and early at 10:30 a.m. yet again for those in the area interested in attending.  One exciting ending saw Flight 8 come down to a three way tie in scoring 2-1 (win-loss).  To break the tie between Bob Chamberlin, Brian Keggins, and Brian Deska, ball difference was used as the determining factor.  Chamberlain had a 153 ball difference, Keggins 44 ball difference, and Brian Deska had but 1 ball difference that came about primarily from his final match 100-14 loss and ultimately, knocked him out of the qualifier.  The top players by flight are listed below:

Flight 1:  1st Brett Stottlemyer, 2nd Andy Lincoln
Flight 2:  1st Dan Heidrich, 2nd Ed Deska
Flight 3: 1st Shaun Wilkie, 2nd Marty Ciccia
Flight 4:  1st Bob Maidhof, 2nd Don Polo
Flight 5:  1st Danny Barouty, 2nd Larry Moy
Flight 6:  1st Richard Molineiro, 2nd Alan Duty
Flight 7:  1st Steve Lipsky, 2nd Joe Hong
Flight 8:  1st Bob Chamberlin, 2nd Brian Keggins

These players have been matched up for the initial round on Sunday as follows:

Danny Barouty v. Don Polo
Andy Lincoln v. Bob Chamberlin
Brett Stottlemyer v. Marty Ciccia
Brian Keggins v. Shaun Wilkie
Steve Lipsky v. Joe Hong
Alan Duty v. Dan Heidrich
Richard Molineiro v. Ed Deska
Larry Moy v. Bob Maidhof

The first two rounds of the day will be played to 125 balls, with the final round changing to 150 balls.  In addition, those remaining must perform their best as play will turn to single elimination for the remaining players.  Good luck to all players as it should be an exciting day.  Updates will be provided throughout the day for those that cannot be present.

Special thanks go out to Peter Burrows and Dave Nangle for keeping the day running smoothly and quickly; to Eric Colbert for assistance with my tire episode today – his kindness was greatly appreciated; and to the many sponsors that helped to make the qualifier happen:
