Alcano ready to defend Korean title

REIGNING World Pool champion Ronato “Ronnie Calamba” Alcano is looking forward to keeping his 10-ball title in the 2007 2nd Annual Korea Pro Pool Tour Championship set Feb. 10-13 at the Lotte Department Store in Incheon, Korea.

It will be the second major tournament for Alcano this year after finishing in the last eight in the 17th Annual All-Kansai 9-Ball Open last week in Osaka, Japan.

Alcano, who vowed to make up for his poor finish in Japan, and Carlo Biado are scheduled to arrive tomorrow from Osaka.

The 34-year-old Alcano, acknowledged by the US based Billiards Digest magazine as “The Most Improved Player,” will be joined by World Pool League champion Dennis Orcollo, upcoming Roberto Gomez and veteran campaigner Dondon Razalan in the Korean event organized by the Dragon Promotion outfits owned by Korean-American pool wizard Charlie Williams.

At stake is the top prize of $10,000 in the event which Alcano won in 2005. No tournament was held last year.

The 27-year-old Orcollo, who won two side events in the 2007 Derby City Classic in Kentucky, reached the round of 16 in the All-Kansai Open while Gomez, a former TV reporter, is fresh from winning the 9-ball tourney in Norway and finishing in the round-of-8 in the 10-ball division of “The Battle of Scandinavia” in Oslo.

The event will feature 64 of the world's top players from the United States, Korea, Germany, Finland, and Japan, according to KPT president Cindy Lee.
