Alcano teams with model for Beauty and Best win

Showing his deadly accuracy and mastery of the curves, Ronnie Alcano carried his gorgeous partner to victory in the San Miguel Corporation Mixed Doubles Championship Saturday at Gerry's Grill in Subic.

Alcano and model Ciel Mae Ochoa got the better of Jundel Mazon and Niña Pangilinan in the title match.

The crowd at the popular restaurant in Waterfront Road got a double treat, getting doses of world-class plays from world-class players and world-class showcase of Filipina beauties.

“It's double the fun,” said one of the fans. “I hoped we could find lady players who are good and beautiful at the same time.”

That's precisely the objective of the event sponsored by the San Miguel Corporation aptly titled “Beauty and the Best.”

“We like to encourage the Filipinas to take billiards seriously,” said Perry Mariano, manager of the organizing Bugsy Promotions.

“If we can develop the skills of a beautiful lady player, she can be a world-famous athlete.”

Playing in a tranquil and cozy setting is unusual for professional cue artists.

“It's nice to play pool pressure-free,” said Alcano, last year's World Pool Championship winner and the reigning world champion in 8-ball. “Of course, it's better if you're playing with beautiful ladies.”

The winner's break format was used in the single elimination event.

Meanwhile, the players get back to serious action when the main draw of the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) 8-ball Tour unfolds on Nov. 30 in Lucena City.

Favored to win the title and the P50,000 prize are Bugsy players Roberto Gomez, Dennis Orcollo and Jeff De Luna.
