Gabriel finds her way in the dark

Julia Gabriel

The Jacoby Cues Great Lakes Tour traveled to Louisville, KY for stop # 3 of the 05-06 season at The Billiards Club Of Louisville on November 5th & 6th. This was the first of three stops this season to be played on 7-ft Diamond tables. The Club, which just opened in June, is owned and operated by Pat McCarthy and Steve Marrilla. It features a full bar with food service along with twelve 7-foot & two 9-foot Diamond Smart Tables. Thirty-sevem players from six states came out to compete for the 2006 WPBA Choice Qualifier & $1000.00 added prize fund.

Early-round matches on Saturday went smoothly with close matches between Ohio's Dawn Fox and Michigan's Julie Melman. Fox pulled out a 7-6 win. On the other half of winner's bracket, Missouri's Julia Gabriel went to work on getting to Sunday on the winner's side with wins over Stacy Schumborg (7-1), Becky Todd (7-2), Sunny Ulrich (7-5), taking her to Sunday's final four on the winner's side. There she faced Illinois's Cheryl Morrell, whom she defeated (7-2). Meanwhile, Dawn Fox matched up against Lisa Cain and earned a narrow 7-6 victory.

Over on the one-loss side, the final four had friends and Adrian, MI natives Lonnie Fox and Julie Melman playing each other, with Melman besting Fox (7-3). Ohio's Tracy Cantrell would face off against Kentucky's Mary Marrilla, who after having a 6-2 lead would let Cantrell slip by (7-6). After her hill-hill loss to Dawn Fox, Lisa Cain would go through the one-loss side to earn a semi-final rematch with Dawn, who had lost the hot seat match to Gabriel (7-6). In the semi-final, Cain had the lead and was about to shoot the nine-ball, when suddenly the power went out due to a traffic accident. With a cool head and quick thinking, owner Pat McCarthy went home to grab his generator. While he was gone, I prepared for his return by stringing extension cords to a couple table lights, so after a hour intermission and some eye adjustment, the action resumed. Cain would make the nine that was suspended in the dark, and eventually go on to defeat Fox (7-4) and earn a spot in the finals against Julia Gabriel. In the single race to nine, both players would trade games all the way to hill where, under pressure, Gabriel would make a fantastic cut shot on the nine-ball for fist place and the qualifier.

The tour staff would like to thank all the players, the owners Pat McCarthy and Steve Marrilla and all their staff, and as always, our sponsors.
