Jasmin Ouschan completes Austrian victory

Jasmin Ouschan

Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) just won the Dynamic Billard Austria Women’s Open in Alpina Wellness & Sports Hotel, St. Johann i.Pg., Austria, with a clear 7:2 victory over Veronika Ivanovskaia (GER).

She was and is the powerhouse in European women’s pool billiard. Jasmin Ouschan has just completed the Austrian victory in St. Johann i.Pg. After Mario He’s victory from yesterday, she did not fall short and took the title in the women’s version of the Euro-Tour. Ouschan had a good start into the tournament. She took her first three victories impressively clear with 7:0 over Anne Darda (GER), 7:2 against Kateryna Polovinchuk (UKR) and 7:1 against Martine Christiansen (NOR). Then, her performance suffered a little bit. „I needed some help during some matches of this tournament“, stated Ouschan after the final match, „but our new national coach Andreas Roschkowsky from Germany is a really nice and knowledgeable person who I have a great contact with. He knew exactly what to say and analysed my matches spot-on so I could find my personal rhythm back“. The „turbulences“ in Ouschan’s way into the final match were caused by Ana Gradisnik (SLO) 7:4 and Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) where Ouschan was already trailing 0:4 but managed to win the match with 7:5. „There is still a lot of work to do“, said Roschkowsky, „we are on a great track but I have some new ideas for the future“. The semi-final was again a clear 7:1 victory for Ouschan. Her opponent in the final match was Veronika Ivanovskaia. The German lady had defeated Claudia Von Rohr (SUI) 7:5, Sara Rocha (POR) 7:1 and in an epic battle in the semi-final Kristina Tkach (RUS) with 7:5. That match was broadcasted LIVE on the EPBF Facebook page today. However, the final match was far from exciting and turned into a disaster for Ivanovskaia. Ouschan was too strong for her and rightfully took the match 7:2 and added another tournament victory to her portfolio.

Tkach and Feijen Dethrone the Austrian Superpower Siblings

Niels Feijen and Kristina Tkach

Kristina Tkach (RUS) and Niels Feijen (NED) have just won the gold medals in the straight pool discipline of the Dynamic Billard European Championships in Albufeira, Portugal.

In the men’s division, „The Terminator“ Niels Feijen played an outstanding tournament. Having won the coveted title in straight pool already 5-times before, Feijen really had an incentive this time. His A-status with the Dutch Olympic Committee and therefore the funding for another year was in danger if he would not have made in into the last eight of the event. After having ousted Stephan Cohen (FRA) 125:3 in the round of the last 32 players, he met the defending Champion Albin Ouschan (AUT) in the next round. Ouschan was a very high obstacle that Feijen needed to overcome in order to get into the round of the last 8. But „The Terminator“ stood tall today and took down Ouschan with 125:88 after a firefly fought match. In the quarter-final, Feijen eliminated Jakub Koniar (SVK) with 125:46 without further problems. Even clearer was Feijen’s victory in the semi-final with Kim Laaksonen (FIN). He ousted the Finish player 125:19 and one could witness Feijen’s hunger to grab his 6th title in straight pool growing strong. In the final match, Feijen met Tomasz Kaplan (POL) who has also earned his merits in the past in straight pool. Today, Feijen was too strong for Kaplan. The Dutch turned the final match into a one man show and after one hour and ten minutes, „The Terminator“ sank the final ball for a 125:13 victory over Kaplan, having used only four innings to claim the victory.

In the women’s competition, Kristina Tkach was up against the Austrian title defender, Jasmin Ouschan (AUT). Tkach’s way into the final looked quite impressive. In the round of the last 16 players she bested Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) 75:4. Then she marched on and triumphed clearly over Amalia Matas (ESP) 75:15. In the semi-final match, Tkach got the better of her teammate Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS) and remained the upper hand with 75:57. In the final match of course, Jasmin Ouschan was awaiting her. The Austrian title defender started furiously and took a 39:-2 lead over Tkach. But the young Russian remained cool as ice and played her game whenever Ouschan allowed her to do so. And she got more chances than expected. Ouschan committed several serious and avoidable mistakes. Leading 61:45, Tkach missed the break ball and Ouschan got back to an open table. The audience and Ouschan were shocked when the Austrian missed the first clear and easy shot! Tkach thanked her in her own way by running the rack and pocketing the remaining 14 balls in order to win the match and the title 75:45. It’s Tkach’s second title in the women’s division after having won the 8-ball in St. Johann i.Pg, Austria last year.

Defending Champions Jasmin and Albin Ouschan Ready for Title Defense

The straight pool competition has commenced at the first day of the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Men, Women and Wheelchair Athletes in Albufeira, Portugal. After last year’s remarkable double victory for Austria through the Ouschan siblings, the focus was on them today again. And they both stood tall.

In the men’s division, Albin Ouschan had Daniele Corrieri (ITA) in his first match. Not an easy task for Ouschan whose scalp was up for grabs today. Corrieri opened the match with a run of 55 balls which was quite a decent inning for the Italian. Ouschan only managed to run one rack before he allowed Corrieri rack to the table. The Italian made 4 balls but then ran out of position. He attempted a jump shot but failed to pocket it. That sealed this fate in that match. The defending Champion got to the table and ran the remaining 86 balls which he needed to win the match 100:59 and advance to the winner’s qualification round, wending Corrieri to the loser’s side. In the next round, Ouschan had a lot of work to do. He was up against Maxim Dudanets (RUS) which again was anything else but an easy draw for him. To the contrary, the young Russian played very steady and self-confident and put a lot off pressure on Ouschan. After 7 innings the score was 93:80 in favour of Dudanets. He was at the table and had a promising break shot on the table in front of him. He tried to fire it in the corner pocket but missed it by a millimetre. That gave Ouschan another chance which he used to finish the match 100:93 in his favour. These two victories from today take Albin Ouschan to the single elimination round of the last 32 men in the straight pool competition.

Another remarkable story revolved around Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) today. The sharp-shooting German encountered „Napoleon“ Marcus Chamat (SWE) in his first match. He ran 100 balls in the first inning and did not allow Chamat to the table at all. In the next round, Roschkowsky met Niels „The Terminator“ Feijen (NED). In that match, ironically he received the same fate. Feijen only needed one inning to destroy Roschkowsky and advance to the single elimination. What goes around, comes around… On the losers side, Roschkowsky met with Cirangir Baran (TUR) who had no chance against the German. 100:31 was the clear result in favour of Roschkowsky.

Probably the toughest defeat of the day way handed to Denis Grabe (EST) in his match against Tomasz Kaplan (POL). When Grabe was trailing 78:81 when he got to the table. Kaplan just fell out of position and missed a shot, giving an open table to Grabe. The Estonian came in too straight for the break ball and almost did not have an angle to break the rack. But he pocketed the break ball with the cue ball rolling towards the head rail where it came to rest almost frozen. Being on 99 points, Grabe missed the last ball and gave the table back to Kaplan. The Polish showed nerves of steel and ran the remaining 19 balls he needed to win the match with the closest of all results, 100:99. On the loser’s side, Grabe took on Daniel Kandi (DEN). This match turned into a real thriller. At 98:98, both players entered into a safety battle with Grabe having the better end on his side, winning the match by a whisker 100:96.

In the women’s straight pool competition, defending Champion Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) started her mission „title defence“ as usual. She showed no mercy to her opponents, winning 75:48 over Veronica Hubrtova (CZE) and 75:37 over Marharyta Fefilava (BLR). Undefeated she marched on into the single elimination round of the last 16 women. Probably her toughest opponent here, Kristina Tkach (RUS) has also shown her class today. She took down Kateryna Polovinchuk (UKR) 75:17, then destroyed Tamara Peeters-Rademakers (NED) 75:6 and creamed Christine Feldmann (SUI) 75:13 for her spot amongst the last 16 women.

Tomorrow, the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Men, Women and Wheelchair Athletes will continue at 09:00 GMT with matches from the men’s straight pool single elimination last 32 players.

Feijen takes Longoni Open on 6th attempt!

Feijen finally wins his sponsor’s own open!

Last night, we concluded the most spectacular Longoni Benelux Open to date. With 240 entries, this sixth edition of the event was the biggest in the series. An incredible field of superb pros, counting no less than seven world champions, in a fierce battle for the championship title, the coveted Longoni cup, the fame and the substantial prize fund.

Yesterday, the elite 'Final 32' lined up some amazing matches. In the early stages of the day, there were already quite some matches worthy of a final, to name but a few:

Nick Van Den Berg (NL) vs Huidji See (NL) [1st round]
Tony Drago (NL) vs Karl Boyes (ENG) [2nd round]
Nick van den Berg (NL) vs Niels Feijen (Official) (NL) [one loss side
Huidji See (NL) vs Andreas Roschkowsky (D) [3rd round]
Ralf Souquet (D) vs Oliver Oliver "the Machine" Ortmann (Official) (D) [3rd round]

By reaching the Final 32, a fantastic achievement in itself, Longoni junior pro Kamila Khodjaeva earned the status of Best Lady, including a prize money bonus.

In the end, eight die hards reached the Quarter Finals. Reigning world 9ball champion Niels Feijen escaped from elimination with hill/hill matches against fellow countryman Nick van den Berg and former world 8ball champion Karl Boyes. Tony Drago, dealt with his opponents in 'Tornado' mode, which put him in the quarters so fast that that he had to wait a long time for all the other matches to catch up. The double knock out stage resulted in the following Quarter Finals:

Andreas Roschkowsky (D) 8-7 Marc Bijsterbosch (NL)
Oliver Ortmann (D) 3-8 Daryl Peach (ENG)
Lars Kuckherm (D) 8-5 Kevin Becker (D)
Tony Drago (MLT) 4-8 Niels Feijen (NL)

Former Longoni Benelux Open Champions reached the first Semi Final. While the other saw two German '1. Bundesliga' teammates facing each other in battle:

Andreas Roschkowsky (D) 5-8 Daryl Peach (ENG)
Lars Kuckherm (D) 3-8 Niels Feijen (NL)

In the end, the conclusion of the event was a revanche match of the 2012 Final. This time, the pool gods favoured Niels Feijen, who had his more than eager eyes on nothing else but the prize. Eventually, 'The Terminator' had to win the Longoni Benelux Open. Everybody expected him to. After all, he is the event's MVP.

Daryl Peach (ENG) 3-8 Niels Feijen (NL)

((( Niels Feijen is the 2014 Longoni Benelux Open Champion )))

In the meantime, the 2014 Longoni Benelux Open Ladies Side Event's Final was still in progress. It became a double hill thriller. Martine Christiansencould have finished it. Instead, she left the 9ball rattling in the jaws of the corner pocket. The cool and collected Kamila Khodjaeva grabbed the opportunity with both hands and pocketed the last two balls for the win. Double success for the fresh new Longoni team member.

Martine Christiansen (NOR) 4-5 Kamila Khodjaeva (B)

There was no better scenario than this for Longoni cues. A double win, the most successful and fulfilling event in the series and smiling faces, throughout the long weekend.

And last, but not least, I want to thank all the players and spectators for attending in great numbers, Thurston Rotterdam and its great staff for hosting the event, Kem Sen and his www.ebillard.fr team for putting together a fantastic live stream, the tournament staff – Alain Desmet, Tom Penrose,Stefan Osnabrug and guest master photographer JP Parmentier – and the people who helped – Crelis Hogchem and Johan Bakermans – all our partners in this venture: Hotel One, King Kong Hostel, Sumo, KNBB, Kamui,Serge Das Billiards, Loontjens Biljarts, Iwan Simonis, Saluc for their Aramith pool balls and Rotterdam Topsport.

Many Shootout Decisions in Euro Team Competition

The team competition always creates a special atmosphere at the European Championships each year. Players all gather together and support their own national team. That was the situation today at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Men, Women and Wheelchair Athletes in Kyrenia, North Cyprus.

Several upsets can be reported from today’s lineups. In the women’s division, team Switzerland with Klaudia Kunz and Christine Feldmann defeated clearly favored team Poland with 2:1. Feldmann lost 4:7 in 9-ball to Katarzyna Wesolowska but her teammate Kunz defeated Oliwia Czuprynska in 8-ball 6:2. The shootout was won by the Swiss team which booked them a seat in the semi-finals already.

The other semi-finalist in the women’s division is team Norway, consisting of Line Kjoersvik and Martine Christiansen. They defeated team Germany 2:0, then team Bulgaria with the same result. In the winner’s qualification round, the Norwegians had to deal with team Russia which is composed of Ana Mazhirina and Darya Sirotina. Mazhirina lost 9-ball 4:7 to Christiansen while Sirotina defeated Kjoersvik with 6:5 in 8-ball. The shootout went in favor of the Scandinavian ladies. Norway as well as Switzerland are waiting in the semi-finals for their opponents to be determined tomorrow.

In the men’s division, the defending Champions Netherlands had a thriller going on against long-time rival Germany. Nick Van Den Berg made a quick 1:0 lead for the Netherlands, winning the 8-ball with 8:4 over Andreas Roschkowsky. Ralf Souquet had a heartbreaker in 9-ball against Niels Feijen which he won with 9:8. At that time, Sebastian Staab was down 2:6 to World 10-ball Champion Huidji See in 10-ball. But Staab was able to turn the tide in the match. he took 6 racks in a row and won his match with 8:6. Germany takes a spot in the quarter-finals while The Netherlands need to win another match on the loser’s side over the winner Poland v Great Britain.

Team Austria is the second quarter-finalist of the day. With victories over Norway 2:1, Croatia 2:0 and Russia 2:1, the Austrians with Albin Ouschan, Mario He and Jürgen Jenisy are looking forward to get their opponent drawn from the loser’s side tomorrow. Team Spain with David Alcaide, Francesco Diaz and Francisco Sanchez Ruiz are also in the quarter-final round. The defeated Switzerland 3:0, Poland 2:0 and their neighbors Portugal 3:0. Strong performance by team Spain for today. The final quarterfinalist is team Finland. The boys from the far north around Petri Makkonen, Aki Heiskanen, Jussi Iivonen and Abbas Al-Marayati have earned their spot through victories over Belgium and Sweden. In the first round, team Finland had a walk-over.

Play will commence tomorrow morning 09:00 local time with the team competition. All results and more info can be found on www.epconline.eu. LIVEStream can be viewed at www.kozoom.com.

Van den Berg is the Longoni Benelux Open 2013 Champion

N. Van den Berg

For the fifth consecutive year the Longoni Benelux Open was staged at De Loft in Leuven (Belgium). With a guaranteed prize fund of € 10,000 and a coveted Longoni cup, the qualification rounds drew 167 entries. Elite players, such as reigning champion Daryl Peach, Niels Feijen, Ralf Souquet, Tony Drago, Nick Van Den Berg, Imran Majid and champion of the inaugural edition Andreas Roschkowsky, turned up to exhibit their spectacular showmanship.

After a long fought battle, from 9.00 am until past midnight, the new champion emerged: ‘El Niño’ Nick van den Berg. He defeated none other than ‘The Kaiser’ Ralf Souquet, who made his first appearance at the Longoni Benelux Open. The conditions were tough, tight pockets and ironically great weather, which made it tropically hot in the venue.

El Niño was still quite fresh, though, as he asked for the time, prior to the semi final. “It’s 11 o’clock”. Upon which he reacted flabbergasted: “Nooo… I thought it was only 8 o’clock”. Nick reached the final undefeated, ousting German upcoming young talent Can Salim, Dutch outsider Fauzi Halaby, Ralf Souquet to reach the quarter final and Imran Majid for the hot seat.

Ralf Souquet traveled a slightly longer road, ousting Belgian local hero Timour Khodaev in the first round, Kasper Kristoffersen from Denmark in the second, but losing to van den Berg in the third. On the one loss side, he showed no mercy against former champion Andreas Roschkowsky to reach the quarter final. He defeated ‘The Tornado’ Tony Drago to reach the semis and ‘The Terminator’ Niels Feijen for the other hot seat.

Again, Longoni’s player representative Niels Feijen came very close with his third place. Sofar, he’s been the most consistent with three spots in the final (2009, 2010 and 2012) and two third places (2011 and this year). Niels commented: “Played my almost worse game, all day. So, that's still a nice result. Was still totally drained from the USA trip, travel back, seven hour jetlag and the ten hour car ride to Holland. Had the mental energy of a three week old peanut butter sandwich, all day”. Well, wouldn’t we all like to play that ‘bad’.

The other semi finalist was up and coming Ivo Aarts from Holland, who has been displaying good form, lately, with a bronze medal at this year’s European Championships.

The great number of participants, the fantastic historic city of Leuven, the incredible weather, Longoni and co-sponsors Loontjens Biljarts, Iwan Simonis, Saluc, Kamui, Serge Das Billiards, De Loft Leuven, the Belgian federation and the Dutch Federation contributed to yet another great success of the Longoni Benelux Open.
