Norris and Daughtrey split top prizes on Q City 9-Ball Tour

Christy Norris

Christy Norris and Kenny Daughtrey split the top two prizes on the August 6-7 stop on the Q City 9-Ball Tour by opting out of a final match. As the undefeated occupant of the hot seat, Norris claimed the official event title. The event drew 43 entrants to Brown's Billiards in Raleigh, NC.

With Daughtrey at work on the loss side, after a third round defeat at the hands of Randy Hodges, Norris advanced to a winners' side semifinal versus Joe Cosky. Jerry Cannon, in the meantime, squared off against Lauren Kauffman. Norris did her part to arrange for an all-female hot seat match by defeating Cosky 6-2. Cannon, though, downed Kauffman 5-2. Norris claimed the hot seat 6-2 over Cannon, in what proved to be her last match of the weekend.

On the loss side, Daughtrey was at work on a seven-match, loss-side winning streak that would take him to the finals. He chalked up wins #3 and #4 against Chad Weachter (6-1) and DJ Outlaw (6-3) to draw Kauffman. Cosky picked up the man who'd sent Daughtrey to the loss side, Randy Hodges, who'd gotten by Bobby Clinton 5-5 (Clinton racing to 7), and J.T. Ringgold, by the same score (Ringgold racing to 9).

A Daughtrey/Hodges re-match was avoided when Cosky downed Hodges 6-3. Daughtrey finished Kauffman's weekend with the first of three straight 6-2 wins. He repeated that score in the quarterfinals against Cosky, and again, in the semifinals versus Cannon. It was at this point that the two tired finalists decided against playing a final match, and chose to split the top two cash prizes.

Tour director Herman Parker thanked the ownership and staff of Brown's Billiards for their hospitality, as well as title sponsor Viking Cues, and Delta-13 racks. The next stop on the Q City 9-Ball Tour, scheduled for August 13-14, will be hosted by Gate City Billiards in Greensboro, NC.

Clinton goes undefeated to claim his first Q City 9-Ball title

Bobby Clinton went undefeated to claim his first Q City 9-Ball title on Sunday, May 1, brushing aside a challenge in the finals by James Blackburn. Blackburn is the owner of The Clubhouse in Lynchburg, VA, which hosted the event that drew 32 entrants to his room.

Blackburn was advancing through the winners' side bracket until he met up with Collin Hall in a winners' side quarterfinal. A 7-7 victory there (Blackburn racing to 9), set Hall up to face Daniel Adams in a winners' side semifinal. Clinton and James Clay squared off in the other one. Clinton advanced to the hot seat match 7-3 over Clay, and was met by Hall, who'd downed Adams 7-4. Clinton then defeated Hall 7-3 and waited in the hot seat for his host to return.

Blackburn opened his five-match, loss-side campaign with a 9-3 win over Chris England and followed it with a 9-4 victory over Andy Bowden. This set Blackburn up against Clay. Adams drew 16-year-old Hunter White, who'd eliminated Meaghan Reilly 7-3 and shut out Jordan Grubb to reach him.

Blackburn and White handed Clay and Adams their second straight defeat (9-2 and 7-2, respectively), and advanced to the quarterfinals. Blackburn ended the teenager White's run 9-4, earning himself a re-match against Hall in the semifinals. Blackburn then defeated Hall 9-3 for a shot at Clinton in the hot seat.

As the higher-ranked player, Blackburn was racing to 9, while Clinton was racing to 7. Clinton completed his undefeated run by giving up only a single rack to Blackburn and claiming the event title.

Tour Director Herman Parker thanked Blackburn and his staff for their hospitality, as well as sponsors Viking Cues, and Delta-13 Racks. The next stop on the Q City 9-Ball Tour, scheduled for the weekend of May 7-8, will be a $2,000-added event, hosted by Billy Macks Grill & Billiards in Mount Sterling, KY.

Tickle and Blackburn split top prizes in a Q City 9-Ball stop

David Tickle and James Blackburn allowed the single match that they played against each other to stand as the result of a Q City 9-Ball Tour stop, on November 14. The two opted out of playing a final, leaving Tickle, in the hot seat, as the winner of the event that drew 38 entrants to the Gate City Billiard Club in Raleigh, NC.

Tickle had sent Dylan Letchworth to the loss side 8-2 in a winners' side semifinal, while Blackburn was busy sending 13-year-old Peter Abantangelo over 8-3. Tickle claimed the hot seat 8-4 over Blackburn.

On the loss side, Letchworth picked up George Crawford, who'd gotten by Colin Hall 8-3 and Bobby Clinton 8-1. Abantangelo drew Jay Calhoun (husband to Belinda Calhoun), who'd defeated Zach Leonard 6-5 and Josh Williams 6-2. Crawford and Calhoun handed Letchworth and Abatangelo their second straight loss. Letchworth forfeited his match, while Calhoun downed Abantangelo 6-3.

With Crawford racing to 8, Calhoun took the quarterfinal 6-5. Blackburn ended Calhoun's run 8-4 in the semifinals. At this juncture, Tickle and Blackburn opted out of the final match and split the top two prizes.

Rogers goes undefeated on Q City 9-Ball Tour

Jason Rogers worked his way undefeated through a field of 39 to capture the August 22-23 stop on the Q City 9-Ball Tour. The event was hosted by Breaktime in Cary, NC.

Rogers worked his way into the hot seat, by first defeating Paul Swinson 8-2 in a winners' side semifinal. Steve Page, in the meantime, was busy sending Matt Fralin to the loss side 10-6. With Page racing to 10, Rogers claimed the hot seat 8-8, and waited on Page's return.

On the loss side, Fralin picked up 13-year-old Peter Abatangelo, who'd defeated Andy Bowden 4-3 (Bowden racing to 6), and J. T. Ringgold 4-4 (Ringgold racing to 8). Swinson drew Bobby Clinton, who'd defeated Jason Best and Jackson Jeffrys, both 7-3, to reach him.

Fralin eliminated Abatangelo 7-2, while Clinton and Swinson locked up in a double hill battle that eventually sent Clinton against Fralin in the quarterfinals. Clinton ended up on the losing end of his second straight double hill match, which gave Fralin a second shot against Page in the semifinals.

Page and Fralin also locked up in a double hill fight, which ended with Page heading back for his second shot against Rogers in the hot seat. Rogers defeated Page a second time, by the same score he'd chalked up in the hot seat match – 8-8 – and claimed the event title.

Frank double dips Clinton to win 4th of July weekend stop on Q City 9-Ball Tour

Trey Frank took two out of three matches against Bobby Clinton to win a July 4th weekend stop on the Q City 9-Ball Tour. The handicapped, 9-ball event drew 38 entrants to the Gate City Billiard Club in Greensboro, NC.

They met first in the battle for the hot seat. Frank had defeated Norris Brady 6-9 (Brady racing to 11), as Clinton was sending Brent Kyles to the loss side 7-3. Clinton took the first of three against Frank 7-3 and waited in the hot seat for him to get back.

On the loss side, Norris Brady ran into David Tickle, who'd defeated Scott Largen 8-2 and Austin Sawyer 8-4 to reach him. Kyles drew Jerry Varnado, recent winner over Mike Davis 8-10 (Davis racing to 13), and Mike Bumgarner 8-5. Brady and Kyles advanced to the quarterfinals; Brady 11-6 over Tickle and Kyles 8-4 over Varnado.

Brady then eliminated Kyles 11-4 for a second shot at Frank in the semifinals. Frank stepped up his game in his second meeting versus Brady, allowing him only five racks of the 11 he would have needed to win, while scoring six to earn himself a second, and, as it turned out, third shot against Clinton in the hot seat.

Frank downed Clinton in both sets of the true double elimination final. Both times, they battled to double hill, which, with Frank racing to 6 and Clinton racing to 7, was a deadlock at 5-6. Frank closed it out 6-6 both times to claim the event title.
