Cardwell goes undefeated to claim Stop #4 on Cuetec DFW 9-Ball Tour

Steven Adkins, Curtis Cardwell and Mark Johnson

Johnson wins nine on the loss side to challenge him in the finals

When Curtis Cardwell won his first Cuetec DFW 9-Ball Tour stop last year, tour representative Monica Anderson made note of the fact that Caldwell had been a “long-time player, (who’s been with us since the tour began in 2017); very loyal, very dedicated, always a contender at every event and just a damn nice guy.”

“His first win (at 2023 Stop #7 last July),” she added, “has been a long time coming.”

As it turned out, 2023 became Cardwell’s best recorded earnings year since he brought home $50 finishing 13th on the Texas Am Tour back in 2011. His second DFW 9-Ball Tour win, this past weekend (April 20-21) – at the same location as his first win last year, at the VFW in Sherman, TX – didn’t take as long. He did it a little differently this year. Last July, he worked through five matches on the loss side and double-dipped another tour veteran, Jonathan Rawlins, in the final. This year, in his first appearance on the tour, he won seven straight, jumping from nowhere in the tour standings to among the tour’s top 10. The $1,500-added Stop #4 on the 2024 tour drew 51 entrants to the VFW in Sherman.

Cardwell got by Robbie Smith (2) in the opening round before facing last year’s tour champion and this year’s current 2nd place competitor in the standings, Gus Briseno. Cardwell allowed Briseno only a single rack, advancing to lock up in a double-hill fight and win versus Hector Guerrero. In his winners’ side quarterfinal, he faced the competitor that he’d double-dipped in the finals to earn his first win last year, Jon Rawlins. Cardwell defeated him 7-5 to draw Dan Bowman in one of the winners’ side semifinals.

Meanwhile, Steven Adkins was working his way to meet Cardwell in the battle for the hot seat. He defeated Neil Sidawi, double hill, Joshua Paredes 6-1, and Max Sun 6-4 to pick up Mitch Owen in the other winners’ side semifinal.

Cardwell defeated Bowman 7-2, as Adkins and Owen fought a double-hill fight for advancement to the hot seat match. Adkins won it and put up an almost double-hill battle for the hot seat. Cardwell closed it out at 7-5 to claim it.

On the loss side, Bowman picked up Mark Johnson, whose third-place finish in last month’s stop on the tour brought him into this event as 4th overall in the tour standings. Johnson had lost his opening match to Joshua Paredes, double hill, and set out on a nine-match, loss-side streak that would take him all the way to the finals. He’d recently eliminated Doug Winnet (loss-side win #5) 7-4 and Robbie Smith 7-1. Mitch Owen drew Kirit Patel, who’d lost a winners’ side quarterfinal to Bowman, and on the loss side, downed Cody McComas 7-3 and eliminated Jon Rawlins, double hill.

Owen defeated Patel 6-5 (Patel racing to 7) and in the quarterfinals, faced Johnson, who’d eliminated Bowman 7-5. Johnson defeated Owen by the same 7-5 score and then, eliminated Adkins 7-3 in the semifinals.

Johnson stepped into the finals to play his 11th and possibly, his 12th match (four, or five more matches than anyone else). If anyone had the right to expect a little assistance in the momentum department, it would have been him. By the same token, 10 matches do have a way of taking their toll. Curtis Cardwell completed his six-match, undefeated streak with a 7-4 victory over Johnson to claim his first 2024 title and his second Cuetec DFW 9-Ball Tour title.

Tour representatives thanked the ownership and staff at the VFW in Sherman for their hospitality, along with title sponsor Cuetec and Associate Sponsor Fort Worth Billiards Superstore. The next stop on the Cuetec DFW 9-Ball Tour, scheduled for Saturday, May 18, will be hosted by Rusty’s in Arlington, TX.

Jeremy Jones comes from the loss side to win his first CUETEC DFW 9-Ball Tour stop

Jeremy Jones, TJ Davis and Curtis Cardwell

Although one could spend a long time detailing the accomplishments of Jeremy “Double J” Jones on the local (Texas), national and international pool stage, a victory on the four-year-old CUETEC DFW 9-Ball Tour had eluded him. Until this past weekend, July 24-25. He joined 95 other competitors at the $1,500-added, Stop #7 on the tour, hosted by Rusty’s in Arlington, TX. Much to the surprise of quite a few, Jones had to come from the loss side to seal the deal, which he did to claim his first CUETEC DFW 9-Ball Tour title.

Jones seemed to be on a steady path toward the victory through his opening matches. A bye was followed by wins over Joe Pelayo 10-5, a shutout over Gert Ehing, a 10-3 win versus Eric Smith and a 10-5 win over Clint Palaci, which set him up to face Curtis Cardwell in one of the winners’ side semifinals. Cardwell had arrived, having won alternate 7-5, 7-4 wins over Jeff Turney, Ryan Lane, Bobby Martinez and Tina Soto. TJ Davis, in the meantime, had gotten by Benito Gutierrez 9-1, Monica Anderson 9-3, Friday Abismo 9-3, Greg Sandifer 9-5 and Jimmy Davis 9-6 to arrive at his winners’ side semifinal matchup versus Donnie Gregory.

Cardwell sent Jones off on a relatively short, three-match loss-side journey with a 7-5 win. Davis sent both Gregory and then, Cardwell over, both 9-5, claiming the hot seat, and, as it turned out, his last win.

On the loss side, Gregory picked up Jeff Franklin, who had started his tournament run in fine fashion, shutting out Charlie Roberts, only to have ‘fine fashion’ turn sour in the second round, when he lost to Jersey Jack Lynch in a double hill fight. Franklin then embarked on a nine-match, loss-side winning streak that had recently included a shutout over Tina Soto and 8-6 win over Robert Clark to draw Gregory. Jones drew Jimmy Davis, who’d dropped a winners’ side quarterfinal match to TJ Davis (9-6) and then defeated Friday Abismo, double hill, and Daniel Herring 7-4.

Franklin chalked up his ninth and final loss-side win, eliminating Gregory 8-4. “Double J” joined him in the quarterfinals after dispatching Jimmy Davis 10-2. Franklin put up a fight in the quarterfinals, tallying seven racks against Jones, which, in the end, only happened twice; the first time, versus Cardwell in the winners’ side semifinal match that had sent Jones to the loss side. Jones moved on 10-7 to a rematch versus Cardwell in the semifinals.

Cardwell, like Franklin before him, put up a fight for a second shot against TJ Davis in the hot seat. He fell one rack short of duplicating his effort against Jones the first time, when he won 7-5. This time, he battled Jones to double hill (6-9) before Jones finished it and advanced to the true double elimination final versus Davis.

Jones left little doubt of the outcome in the opening set, allowing TJ Davis only a single rack to force a second set. Davis got a few chances in that second set, but Jones was at 10 before Davis was able to chalk up a sixth rack. Jeremy “Double J” Jones added a CUETEC DFW 9-Ball Tour title, his first, to his lengthy resume.

Tour representatives thanked the ownership and staff at Rusty’s, including Jeff Pitts, GM, for their hospitality, as well as their main sponsors, CUETEC and Fort Worth Billiards Superstore. The next stop (#8) on the CUETEC DFW 9-Ball Tour, scheduled for Aug. 21-22, will be hosted by Snookered in Frisco, TX.

Stanley jumps way out in front of Omega Billiard Tour standings with undefeated fourth win

(l to r): Tony Top, TJ Davis, Rick Stanley

Rick Stanley cemented his hold on the top spot in the Omega Billiards Tour rankings with an undefeated win on the weekend of October 14-15. It was his fourth overall win on the tour since February, and his third undefeated trip. The $1,700-added event drew 64 entrants to The Hideaway in Dallas, TX.

Stanley had to face a relatively unexpected opponent in both the hot seat match and finals. Tony Top, who made his first appearance on the 2017 tour in September, finishing well out of the money, successfully navigated his way through six opponents – five on the winners’ side and one on the loss side – to challenge Stanley and in finishing second, rocketed from #170 on the rankings list to somewhere among the tour’s top 40 players.

Following victories over Frank Cherry, Robert Reighter, Robin Barbour, and Gerardo Perez, Stanley moved into a winners’ side semifinal match against TJ Davis. Top, in the meantime, having defeated Curtis Cardwell, Highway Sigadi, Mike Nagaki, and Robert Clark, faced Hector Guerrero in the other winners’ side semifinal.

Stanley sent Davis to the loss side 9-3, as Top was busy sending Guerrero over 7-3. In their first of two, Stanley claimed the hot seat over Top with a 9-4 win.

On the loss side, Davis picked up Robert Clark, who, following a defeat at the hands of Top in one of the winners’ side quarterfinals, had defeated Mike Voelkering (#2 in the tour rankings) 8-3 and Alberto Nieto 8-1. Guerrero drew Gerardo Perez, who’d dropped a winners’ side quarterfinal match against Stanley and then, over the next two matches, gave up only two racks; none at all to Michael Thomas and two to Curtis Cardwell.

Davis downed Clark 8-4 and advanced to the quarterfinals. He was joined by Perez, who’d eliminated Guerrero 7-4. Davis ended Perez’ three-match, loss-side streak 8-6 in those quarterfinals, and then had his two-match, loss-side streak ended in a double hill battle against Top.

The wait did nothing to slow Stanley down. He’d given up four racks to Top in the hot seat match, and reduced that number to one in the finals, claiming the event title.

Tour director Melinda Bailey thanked the ownership and staff at The Hideaway, as well as sponsors Michael Hoang of OMEGA Billiards Supply, FargoRate.com and OB Cues. The next stop on the Omega Billiard Tour, scheduled for November 11-12, will be a $1,700-added event, hosted by The Billiard Den in Richardson, TX.

The finals started off close but then Sharik pulled ahead to win the final match with a score of 8-5 to capture his first Omega Billiards Tour stop!  Big congrats to Sharik going undefeated!  Congrats to CJ Wiley for his great 2nd place finish, to Rick Stanley for his highest finish yet with 3rd place, and to Mike Voelkering for a great finish in 4th place!

Tony Sulsar Back in the Winners Circle at the Omega Billiards Tour Season Opener

Tony Sulsar, Daniel Herring and Devin Poteet

On the weekend of January 9-10, the Omega Billiards Tour Season Finale was hosted by Rusty’s Billiards in Arlington, Texas.   The staff and owners treated the players well with great service and an amazing atmosphere, and they took care of all us all weekend long covering very long hours and we very much appreciate each and every one of them!

We were able to extend the field to 97 players!  Highest number so far on the Tour, and it was a great way to open the 2016 Omega Billiards Tour Season!

Always a top contender Daniel Herring had a heck of a tourney with wins over Trent Stith 7-2, Gary Pope 7-0, Thomas Barrington 7-1, Phillip Palmer 7-6, Tony Matthew 7-4, and Friday Abismo 7-2 to make it to the hotseat match.  Tony Sulsar was making strides on the top half of the board with wins over Shane Minihan 8-6, Casey Dawson 8-0, a hill-hill thriller match over 18-year-old Devin Poteet 8-7, Eric Hsu 8-2, Larry Land 8-1, and Mike Voelkering 8-3.

The young gun Devin made a tear on the one-loss side after he lost hill-hill against Tony Sulsar.  He defeated Noreen Moy 8-0, Jamie Welch 8-4, Nick Conner 8-5, Curtis Cardwell 8-4, Chris Ferguson 8-5, Crispian Ng 8-5, and Friday Abismo 8-4.  Mike Voelkering would have a GREAT finish – he played with a lot of focus all weekend and placed an impressive 4th after a tough loss against Devin 8-5.

In the hotseat match Tony Sulsar and Daniel Herring were battling it out Daniel came on top 7-2.  This meant rematch for Devin and Tony in the semi-final match and it was another nail biter and close match with Tony inching out the win 8-6.  Congrats to Devin for his fantastic 3rd place!

Tony then got another chance at Daniel Herring in the finals.  Tony would need to defeat Daniel twice, and twice he did, 8-2 and 8-4.  BIG congrats for a hard fight to Daniel for placing an impressive 2nd place!  And also to Tony Sulsar who made up for his lack of high finishes last year to start the season out with the FIRST PLACE title!

Congrats also to Friday and Greg Sandifer for 5th/6th place, and Tony Matthew and Crispian Ng for 7th/8th places.

Congrats to ALL the players and fans for a great event!

Greg Sandifer Wins Again at Fifth Omega Billiards Stop

Greg Sandifer, Carl Bodker and Kirit Patel

On the weekend of May 30-31, the Omega Billiards Tour was honored to play at a new location, Fox and Hound in Dallas, Texas.   With two large separate areas to play in, great food, wonderful atmosphere, and great staff, the Omega Tour players already can’t wait to play here next year.  Shout-out to Zach and all the staff for making us feel so welcomed!

Who would win this event? On Sunday – there were a lot of new faces vying for first place, and some familiar.    There would be SEVERAL highest-yet high finishes by many players.  In the end, recently crowned BCAPL Texas State Champion, Greg Sandifer, would eventually win the $,1,500-added event with 80 players.

Greg Sandifer had his hands full all weekend and defeated James Dye 7-0, Gary Pope 7-4, Robert Kempf 7-3, Curtis Cardwell 7-5, Carl Bodeker 7-0 and then Kirit Patel 7-4 for a spot in the finals.  Who would Greg play in the finals?  Carl Bodeker!  Carl’s good luck charm was in attendance (his daughter) and it gave him additional drive and focus.  Carl defeated Joseph Pruitt 7-2, Ethan Townsend 7-2, Monica Anderson 7-0, Crispian Ng 7-5, and  Nick Conner 7-1 before getting sent to the one-loss side by Greg.

From there, Carl didn’t give up and he defeated Crispian Ng 7-4, Curtis Cardwell 7-2, and Kirit Patel 7-5 for a spot in his first finals on the Omega Billiards Tour!

In 9th-12th places, Bobby Martinez, Kyle Rowland and Steve Singleton placed their highest finish yet on the Tour!  They were joined by Anthony Schaeffer.  7th/8thwas filled by Jake Hulsey (local cuemaker and also his highest finish yet) along with 2014 Tour Champion, Nick Conner.  5th/6th was filled by Crispian Ng and Ricky Carpenter (his highest finish, also).  4th place was filled by Curtis Cardwell who was the one who took down most of the higher ranked players all weekend.  He placed his highest finish so far on the tour also.  And not yet done – Kirit Patel placed an impressive 3rd and he also placed his highest finish yet.  And with Carl in the finals – it was already his highest finish yet on the Omega Tour, as well!

Carl won the first set in the finals against Greg 7-4.  Carl was playing great!  While Car’s daughter might have been in attendance, Greg’s son had a birthday that weekend and therefore he also had inspiration.  Greg played fantastic the second set and came back to win the entire event with a score of 7-5 in the second set of the finals!  Both players played really good in the finals and it was a treat for all the fans who were there watching their impressive play.

Daniel Herring Wins His First Omega Billiards Tour Stop

Tommy Ulbik, Denny Sneed and Daniel Herring

On the weekend of February 21-22, Daniel Herring won his first Omega Billiards Tour Stop!  The event was $,1,500 added with 80 players and held at The Billiard Den in Richardson, Texas.

After a great opening day on Saturday, there was still a lot of great competing going on.  By Sunday afternoon, Tommy Ulbik defeated Curtis Cardwell hill-hill, then Steve Raynes 6-3, and also Jeremy Jones 6-6 to win a spot in the hotseat.  Daniel Herring defeated Crispian Ng 7-3, Steve Collins 7-4, and Denny Sneed 7-1 to also win a spot in the hotseat.

On the one-loss side, 2014 Tour Champion Nick Conner defeated Phillip Palmer 8-2 and Crispian Ng 8-2 before running into a determined Denny Sneed who won 7-1.  Barry Emerson defeated Paul Guernsey 8-4, Steve Collins 8-3, Cory Anderson 8-6, and Jeremy Jones 8-5.

Barry and Denny were then battling it and it went hill-hill with Denny coming out on top.  Barry would place 4th.

In the hotseat, another battle was going on between Daniel and Tommy.  It was the first time for each to be in the hotseat and both were playing really, really well.  When the smoke cleared, Tommy had won hill-hill.  This sent Daniel to the one-loss side where Denny Sneed was waiting.  Denny was the farthest traveler (from Odessa, Texas) and he got off to a good start against Daniel, up 4-1.  Daniel didn’t give up though and won the next 6 games and defeated Denny 7-4.  Denny would get another third place under his belt on the Omega Tour!

Daniel then matched up against Tommy again, this time in the finals.  Daniel won the first set in the double elimination format by a score of 7-2.  He would repeat that score in the second set to earn him his first Omega Tour stop title!

After the event, Tournament Director Melinda Bailey talked to both players.  She asked Daniel how it felt and he said, “Great.”  That’s it?  “Okay, it feels awesome.  I was upset I lost the hosteat match hill-hill and then when I found myself down 4-1, I didn’t want my tourney to end that way.  Then I won 6 in a row to get another chance in the finals.  I felt like I’ve been due for a win for quite some time.  I haven’t won a big tournament in many years, so this feels really awesome.  ”

Tommy was a little deflated to get second, but still very happy with his highest finish yet.  Tommy said, “I just tried to forget about my misses and play the right shot.”  Well, it worked!

Daniel would win his FIRST Omega event and Tommy would place an impressive 2nd out of 80 players!  Congratulations to ALL the players!!

A HUGE thank you goes out to our sponsors Omega Billiards Supply, Predator Cues, Poison Break Cues, BCAPL/CSI, and Lucasi and Players Cues.  We would also like to give a big thanks to our additional sponsors, Wallace Custom Cues, OB Cues, Irving Ink and Thread, Pro Billiard Service, AZBilliards.com, Billiards Digest, and BilliardsPress.com.

At last month's tournament, Tony Sulsar went undefeated to win the tourney, but this time his road to the finals was derailed by a determined Sky Massingill which stopped Tony getting to the hotseat match undefeated.  Sky would have a fabulous tournament defeating William Howard, Adam Pontious, Charlie Smith, Willy Orozco, and then Tony to meet local Dylan Weinheimer in the hotseat.  Dylan, who is a beast on the table, proved that easily by winning over Sam Hargrove, Vince Miller, the always formidable Greg Sandifer, consistent Mike Voelkering, and David Josephson.  He then prevailed with a hill-hill win over Sky in the rocking chair to have a seat in the finals.

Tony would make an impact on the one-loss side by first defeating the talented Barry Emerson hill-hill, Curtis Cardwell, and then Sky to secure his spot in the finals.  Brian Anderson and Greg Sandifer both placed 7th/8th and had a great tournament.  Barry and David Josephson would place an impressive 5th/6th (their highest finish yet) and Curtis had a fantastic event placing 4th!  Sky would also have his highest finish to date placing 3rd and we know he will be in the winner’s circle soon on the Omega Tour.

In the finals, Dylan and Tony had their work cut out for them.  On this handicapped tour, they both race to 8 (the handicaps range from 5 to 9) and the fans were in for a treat as both players performed very well with their smooth strokes and excellent cue ball control!  One could not help but improve their game just by watching these two players.  The first set was a nail biter and went hill-hill.  The second set was not as close, but still fantastic play with Tony coming out on top and winning 8-4.  Dylan placed an impressive 2nd place while Tony captured the first place monies, including a beautiful Lucasi Hybrid cue.  Tony’s long day came to an end around midnight after capturing the coveted 1st place crown.  A BIG congrats to all the players!  There were several new faces and numerous high finishes for the tour’s regulars.

The Predator Player Points Tracker will be tested for only two more stops to see who wins the coveted Predator prizes at the end of the year!  Tony Sulsar now sits in 1st place, with Crispian Ng in 2nd and Jesse Hernandez in 3rd.  The top 3 ranked players earn Predator Prizes at the end of the year and everyone is anxious and ready to place higher and higher in the stops to move up on the list!  CSI / BCAPL are giving free entries to the 2014 BCAPL Nationals for players ranked 4th-8th at the end of the year, also.  Thank you to our additional sponsors, OB Cues, Irving Ink and Thread, Lucasi Cues, Players Cues, AZBilliards.com, and BilliardsPress.com.

Tour Directors Melinda Bailey and Brian Anderson would like to thank Rusty’s Billiards and their awesome staff for their great hospitality all weekend!  A big thank you also goes out to Michael Hoang, who is the main sponsor of the Tour and owner of Omega Billiards Supply in Hurst, TX.  Michael and Omega Billiards supply are well known for the huge booths at many of the large tournaments across the country. The next (fifth) stop on the Omega Billiards Tour is scheduled for August 3-4 at Clicks Billiards in Arlington, TX.  All of the six events for 2013 on the Omega Billiard Tour's inaugural season have been filled to their 64-player capacity, with a 50+ waiting list!  Pool is alive and thriving in Texas!!

Thank you to all the players, fans, sponsors and pool rooms!!!
