Wallen goes undefeated to win debut Tiger Florida Tour

This past weekend (June 14), the five-year-old Flamingo Tour became the brand new Tiger Florida Tour, adopting its schedule and holding its first tour stop under the new name. The debut stop on the Tiger Florida Tour ended precisely the way that the final stop on the Flamingo Tour ended, with April Wallen and Crystal McCormick facing each other in a finals battle, eventually won by Wallen, by the identical score that had closed proceedings on the Flamingo Tour. The debut stop on the new Tiger Florida Tour drew 26 entrants to Brown's Billiards in Holly Hill, FL.

The early double elimination stages of the tournament led to eight players – four on the winners' side and four on the losers' side – being re-drawn to compete in a single elimination format. April Wallen, Christie Cloke, along with Kellys Kavanaugh and Coyle were the final four remaining on the winners' side of the bracket. Crystal McCormick, Sharon Hubbard, Jennifer Page and Roe Guarnero were the last four standing on the losers' side.

The re-draw set Wallen against Hubbard, Cloke versus Page, Kavanaugh against Guarnero and Coyle versus McCormick. Wallen and Page defeated Hubbard and Cloke by the same 7-2 score. McCormick won her quarterfinal match 7-5, while Kavanaugh, the odds-on favorite in her match versus Guarnero, allowed a cue ball to get away from her while shooting at the 9-ball in what was the deciding game in a double hill match. The cue ball found a pocket, giving Guarnero ball-in-hand, and the 7-6 win that advanced her to the semifinals.

Wallen advanced to her second final in a row on the tour with a double hill win over Page, as McCormick advanced to meet her for a second time with a 7-4 over Guarnero. Wallen completed her undefeated run and second tour victory over McCormick 7-5.

Tour director Mimi McAndrews thanked title sponsor Tiger Cues, as well as co-room owners Dean Dyreson and John Clow and their staff for their hospitality. She also thanked co-sponsors Ozone Billiards and Boynton Billiards. The next stop on the Tiger Florida Tour, scheduled for July 12, will be hosted by the Corner Pocket in Largo, FL.

“We are sad to say good-bye to our beloved Flamingo," said McAndrews in a press release announcing the tour's new title sponsor. "However, we believe that our new name and title sponsor will take the awareness of our tour and all of our sponsors to the next level. The Regional Tour will continue without interruption, and we look forward to having more open tournaments as well.”

“Mike” comes out of retirement to go undefeated on the Flamingo Tour

Maridana

In 1978, a college junior by the name of Maridana "Mike" Heydon won the Women's division of the American College Union International's annual pool tournament in Lincoln City, Oregon. About a year after college, Maridana Heydon quit the sport, "cold turkey," as she described it, to pursue a career and a family. On the weekend of March 8-9, 36 years later, at a $500-added stop on the Flamingo Tour, hosted by Wally's in Lakeland, FL, the former college champion re-emerged and as Maridana Fitzgerald, went undefeated through a field of 37 entrants.

Fitzgerald's path through the field went through Jennifer Page, Erikka Piersall and Crystal McCormack to move among the final four winners, who advanced to the tournament's single elimination phase, entailing four quarterfinal matches, two semifinals and a final. Her victory over McCormack to make the cut was the first of three straight double hill matches that would eventually move her into the winners' circle.

Her finals opponent, Stephanie Mitchell, had defeated Echo Pinkley, Desiree Haliburton, Chris Fields and April Wallen to make the cut. Also advancing on the winners' side were Cassidy Mulligan and Jessica Barnes. Moving into the quarterfinal matches from the losers' bracket were Angela Ger, Vanessa Seaver, Wallen and Sue Roberts.

Fitzgerald drew Wallen, Mitchell faced Seaver, Mulligan had to contend with Ger and Barnes met Roberts. Mulligan shut Ger out to advance to the semifinals, while Mitchell and Roberts advanced with 7-5 victories over Seaver and Barnes. Fitzgerald survived her first of three straight double hill matches, over Wallen.

Both semifinal matches were double hill affairs, and both hinged on last minute mistakes. Mulligan gave Mitchell ball in hand, shooting at the 9-ball in the deciding game. Roberts had been up on Fitzgerald 6-3, but Fitzgerald fought back to tie it at 6-6. In the final rack, Roberts got a look at the 9-ball, but rattled it in the hole, essentially handing the semifinal victory to Fitzgerald.

"I thought the thing was over," said Fitzgerald later, but it wasn't and she advanced to the finals.

The final match also featured a costly error. Fitzgerald and Mitchell fought back and forth to yet another double hill juncture, at which point, Mitchell scratched, shooting at the 1-ball in the deciding rack. Fitzgerald ran the table to complete her undefeated run and claim the event title.

"It was not an easy runout," said tour director Mimi McAndrews of that final rack. "She worked for it."

For Fitzgerald's part, she was glad to be back at the tables, after being away for so many years. And aware, she said, of a higher level of talent than she remembered from her college years.

"I was very impressed with the quality of play at the tournament," she said. "There were some great players, and I was thrilled that I won."

Tour director Mimi McAndrews thanked room owner Jim Thomas and his staff, as well as sponsors Boynton Billiards, Ozone Billiards, and the Simonis Cloth Satellite Tour.

Seaver shoots for the Cure and FB Tour Champion title at Amy’s Billiards

Amy Poulter, owner Amy’s Billiards; Jeannie Seaver, winner; Jennifer Page

The largest and longest event for the Flamingo Billiards Tour turned out a record-breaking fifty women on Saturday at the FBT’s 5th Annual “Cues for Cure” breast cancer fundraiser at Amy’s Billiards in Stuart, Florida! A huge "THANK YOU" to all of the players, spectators and sponsors who supported this event, which benefitted the South Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

With so many players, this one-day event was a true test of endurance. Despite having to shoot into the wee hours of the morning, the players remained patient yet persistent. Ultimately, however, experience and determination paid off. About an hour before sunrise Jeannie Seaver won her fourth event of the year.  Seaver, whose stroke only got better the closer to it got to daylight, defeated last year’s winner of the “Cues for the Cure” event, Jennifer Page, who shot well throughout the day but couldn’t keep up with Seaver, who barely missed more than two shots the entire final match.

Seaver eliminated newcomer Jessica Karamia Human and Crystal McComick in the final single elimination board. Page defeated Cassidy Mulligan and Vanessa Seaver to make it to the final match.  Seaver also takes the 2013 FBT Champion title again this year.

More than half the players were playing in support of or in memory of a loved one or friend who had breast cancer or some other form of cancer.  Players and spectators participated in the raffle and other games to raise money for the cause. Darlyne Petrovit won the jar of gummy bears with the closest guestimate of the number of candies in the jar without going over. Cathy Sparling won the jar of M&M’s. Other prizes included cues, cue cases, pool lessons, gift baskets and pink ribbon teddy bears.

Many special thanks to all of you who took time to participate, thanks to everyone who brought a friend or two, thank you to the players who drove hours to attend this event, thank you to the spectators, thank you for your donations, participating in the games and your boundless enthusiasm in supporting the cause!

Thanks to Martz cues, billiard professionals Hunter Lombardo and Tommy Kennedy, Alicia Borjas, Darlyne Petrovit, Janis Sessions, Boynton Billiards and Ozone Billiards. A special thank you to Ann Hanlon for donating her day to help with the fundraising.

Thanks to John Lewis and the American CueSports Association /Pure X All American Tour for their joint sponsorship. Finally, thanks to Amy Poulter and staff at Amy’s Billiards for their ongoing support of the "Cues for the Cure" fundraiser and the FBT.

Seaver on Top at Slate Billiards

Jeannie Seaver, Mike Bradford (room owner) and Amy Poulter

Boynton Beach, Fla. – Not to be deterred after getting knocked out early at last month’s event, Jeannie Seaver came to win the Flamingo Billiards Tour Stop #5 on Saturday. Thirty-two players filled the board at Slate Billiards in Boynton Beach, Florida, including Amy Poulter, who has been absent from the tour for more than a year.  But Poulter, room owner of Amy’s Billiards in Stuart, Florida, was back in great form, finishing second only to Seaver.

Her path to the finals was challenging after sending Kathleen Lawless west in a double hill match, then losing a close match to newcomer Kelly Errair. Poulter got past Crystal McCormick in another double hill match, the ended the day for Jennifer Page, and then matched up again with Kelly Errair in the final board, winning 7-1.  Seaver swept past Tour Director Mimi McAndrews, sister Vanessa Seaver, took the edge in a double hill match with Cassidy Mulligan and then won over Sue Roberts to get to the finals.

The format is a modified-double elimination playing down to four on each side. The four players on the one-loss side draw into the winners bracket and it is single elimination from that point.  Also making it to the final board of eight was Jessica Barnes, Jennifer Page, Sue Roberts, Cassidy Mulligan, Vanessa Seaver and new player Kelly Errair.

This is Seaver’s third win this year, widening the end-of-year points gap between her and rival McCormick with Seaver decidedly on top.

Many thanks to Slate Billiards’ room owner, Mike Bradford, and sponsors Z9 Billiards Cloth, new sponsor Ozone Billiards and Boynton Billiards for their support of the Flamingo Billiards Tour.

The Flamingo Billiards Tour is a WPBA-recognized Regional Tour, and is a stepping-stone to the Women’s Professional Billiard Association for women who want to play professionally.  Tour Stop #6, the “5th Annual Cues for the Cure” is scheduled for Oct. 19, 2013 at Amy’s Billiards in Stuart, Florida.

Ultimate Billiards Hosts 2012 Sunshine State ACS Championships

Ladies Team Power Pak

Ft. Pierce, FL (July 29, 2012) – Thursday evening 16 Scotch Double teams kicked off the 2012 Sunshine State ACS 8-Ball Championship events held at Ultimate Billiards in Ft. Pierce, FL.  Jennifer Page and Zeno Rawley of Stuart, Florida, made it to the hot seat.  The team of Colleen Russell & Steve Rolls of Port St. Lucie, Florida, played the Miami team of Kelly Coyle & Jaran Hilton. Although it was a battle, the Miami team bested the Port St. Lucie team to make it to the finals.  However, Page and Rawley proved to be too much for team Miami to handle.  Page and Rawley finished with an undefeated series to capture the Scotch Doubles Division Title.

As the finals of the Scotch Doubles finished, the Men’s and Women’s Singles got underway. With a field of 29 men and 15 women the draw was completed and play began. Throughout the day many a hill-hill match was played. There would be no clear victor to these two tournaments until the last eight ball was pocketed. Cue maker Danny Green not only knows how to make cues but he knows how to use one as well. Green settled for fourth place after knocking out Jerry Sotelo who finished 5th and 6th along with  Rich Johnson.  On Saturday morning in the men’s division three players returned to battle it out for the title of Men’s Sunshine State ACS 8-Ball Champion.  Randy Epperson of Miami held the hot seat. Justin Gilsinan of Port St. Lucie finished third as Johnny Aguillera moved on to meet Epperson in the finals. This being a true double elimination tournament Aguillera needed two sets for the win. The first set went much the course of the entire tournament with Johnny getting by with a hill-hill victory to set the scene for the final match.  The final game and final eight ball came down to yet another hill-hill game. The deciding eight ball went to Johnny Aguillera along with the title Sunshine State ACS 8-Ball Champion Men’s Singles Division.

Jeannie Seaver won the Women’s Sunshine State ACS 8-Ball Champion Division.  Cheryl Perez finished second, third place went to Jamie Toennies, with Cassidy Mulligan fourth, and fifth/sixth went to Janice Sessions and Janet Smith.

On the Women’s team side Power Pak, including Jeannie Seaver along with, sister Vanessa Seaver, Cassidy Mulligan, Tracy McCreary, and Kira Brown, took home the Women’s Sunshine State ACS 8-Ball Team Championship title.  After Eight finished second, and the St. Pete Girls finished third.

The Men’s final three teams returned Sunday with a Palm Beach County ACS League in the hot seat and another in the semi-finals.  Chalk’s Cheap held the hot seat from Saturday night while Smoke Signals and No Butts squared off to decide who would go home in third place. When the smoke cleared, No Butts got theirs handed to them settling for third.

As a spectator of these tournaments I have to say that when speaking to No Butts, the third place team finishers, they told me they expected to go two and out.  I believe because these guys not only came as a team they ARE a team all year long and with that, their game was up by a good 30 percent above the individual’s ability. No Butts proved that with the right support group great things are accomplished.
Although Smoke Signals moved forward to face Chalk’s Cheap in the finals, Smoke Signals couldn’t get the fire lit and Chalk’s Cheap was crowned the 2012 Florida Sunshine State ACS 8-Ball Team Champion.

Special thanks to Robbie Morito, President of the Sunshine State ACS Association, ACS Executive Director John Lewis, who flew in from Green Bay, Wisconsin to referee the matches. Also our thanks to Ted Harris and Danny Green of Ted Harris Custom Cues, who were on hand for re-tipping and conditioning the cues. Seaver strikes again on the Flamingo Billiards Tour

Crystal McCormick and Jeannie Seaver

Boynton Beach, FL  (June 23, 2012) – There was not a more appropriate day for the third 2012 Flamingo Billiards Tour stop at Slate Billiards in Boynton Beach, Florida, than National Pink Flamingo Day! Sixteen players braved the wind and rain from tropical storm Debby to compete in the modified-double elimination format, playing down to the final four.  Two from each side redrew into a single elimination bracket.

The first player to make it to the final four-board was Shanelle Loraine. Loraine made her way there defeating Kelly Coyle, Tour Director Mimi McAndrews, and Kelly Cavanaugh. Crystal McCormick was the second player on the final four- board, winning over Debbie Barkley, new player Juliette Waiter, and then sending Jeannie Seaver west in a much anticipated match up.  Seaver, who did not have her usual game on Saturday, came back after being down 6 -2, winning three games in a row making it 6-5. Just when it looked as if Seaver would get to the hill, a missed shot left McCormick out.

Kelly Cavanaugh, fresh off her first professional event at the WPBA US Open, was the third player to make it to the final four. Cavanaugh sent Cassidy Mulligan and Alicia DeAbreu to the west before losing to Shanelle Loraine.  Cavanaugh stayed in the event with a tough hill-hill battle against Sue Roberts. Roberts, who earlier sent Jennifer Page west, followed Page west courtesy of Seaver. Roberts then knocked out Cassidy Mulligan, to battle it out with Cavanaugh. On the hill, Roberts, with ball in hand and the 8-ball on the rail, over cut the 8-ball trying to get shape on the 9. That miss allowed Cavanaugh to take the game and the third spot on the final four-board.

The last spot on the final four was filled by Seaver.  After defeating Robin Boggs and Sue Roberts, and then losing to McCormick, Seaver matched up again with Boggs.  Missing a crucial 9-ball that would have put Boggs on the hill, Seaver pocketed the 9 and took the last place on the final four board.

In the redraw Cavanaugh squared off against McCormick, who had been playing almost flawlessly all day. Seaver drew Loraine.  Both McCormick and Seaver won handily and advanced to the finals. Although Seaver’s game was off, and she had earlier lost to McCormick, McCormick couldn’t keep the momentum going and wasn’t able to take advantage of Seaver’s missed shots. Seaver went on to win the match and the third Flamingo Billiards Tour stop.

Many thanks to room owners Mike Bradford and Joe Sistarelli at Slate Billiards (www.slatebilliards.com), for being great hosts, and to Boynton Billiards for their continued support of the FBT.

Page pulls ahead to win FBT Mini-Tour event at Grovers

West Palm Beach, FL (June 9, 2012) – Jennifer Page and Debbie Barkley made it through the round robin format to the finals of the second FBT Mini-Tour event of 2012, held at Grover’s Billiards in West Palm Beach, Florida on Saturday, June 9, 2012.  In this handicapped event, the players played each player a set of 3 games, one 8-ball and two 9-ball.

Robin Boggs and Sue Roberts played strong, as did Alicia DeAbreau and Susan Martin.  The games were played on bar boxes, and the scores were very close.  Page and Barkley ended up with 11 games each. The final match was a race to five, with the winner of the lag picking the race or the game, 8-ball or 9-ball.  The match started with 8-ball, and Barkley took the lead 2-1. However, Page came back and took the lead in 9-ball.  But for Barkley’s scratch on the 8-ball it likely would have been a hill-hill match, but Page won the next game and the match.  In addition to cash, Page wins a paid entry to the Flamingo Billiard Tour stop at Slate Billiards in Boynton Beach, Florida on June 23, 2012.

Many thanks to Grover’s room owner Jason Jenkins for supporting the Flamingo Billiards Mini-Tour, and thanks to all the players who came out to play.

Alicia Deabrue Wins First Mini-Tour Event

Alicia DeAbreu won the Flamingo Billiards Tour End of Year Mini-Tour event, her first win on the 8-Ball/9-Ball format on Saturday at Slate Billiards in Boynton Beach, Florida.  DeAbrue made it to the finals from the one loss side after being sent west by Jennifer Page.  DeAbrue then matched up against Sue Roberts, who played strong all day. But DeAbrue ultimately prevailed, only to meet Page again in the final match.  DeAbrue took advantage of missed shots by the more veteran players Roberts and Page. Page was late getting in stroke for the final match, but caught a second wind to win five racks in a row. However, Page gave DeAbreu one too many chances back at the table.  DeAbrue finally won her first event on the Mini-Tour!

Sue Roberts won the Mini-Tour Champion title as the highest points finisher for the year. Many thanks to Mike Bradford and Joe Sistarelli, owners of Slate Billiards, and world professional Nick Varner, for their support of the Flamingo Billiards Tour.

Jeannie Seaver 2011FB Tour Champion; Chris Fields earns 2012 WPBA Exemption

Boynton Beach, Fla. (Nov. 19, 2011) – If there was any doubt that Florida’s top women 9-Ball players were in the same pool room on Saturday, that doubt was quickly eliminated by the never-ending display of banks, caroms and combos executed with perfection throughout the entire day. At the end of it all, however, it was Jessica Barnes who played strong enough to win the Flamingo Billiards Tour $1,000-added End of Year event.  This was Barne’s first win on the FBT.

Hot off a recent win on the BAAT tour, Barnes came to the FBT with the same thought in mind. However, Jessica’s first match was a tough double-hill challenge with Kelly Coyle that almost sent Jessica west.  Coyle missed the match-winning nine-ball and left Jessica out.  Barnes then sent Shanelle Loraine west, only to be stopped by Chris Fields 7-2.  Jessica quickly made it to the redraw by sending Christie Cloke home, 7-2.  Fields made it to the redraw on the winner’s side after sending both Barnes and Janis Sessions to the one-loss side.

Jeannie Seaver, in her attempt to win three FBT events in a row, had a rough start to the day losing 7-5 to Jennifer Page.  Not to be stopped, Seaver made it back to the redraw with wins over Loraine, Sessions and Sue Roberts.  Page also made it to the redraw with wins over Vanessa Seaver and a tough win over Roberts 7-5.

Four make it to the semi-finals

In the semi-finals Barnes drew Chris Fields. Jeannie Seaver would play Jennifer Page again. Down 4-0, Seaver looked like she was losing her mojo. Not to be shut out, Seaver’s stroke caught a second wind and came back forcing Page into a double-hill match.  With the 9-Ball sitting in front of the side pocket, the cue ball on the other side and several balls blocking any kind of carom or combo shot, Page took a chance hitting the two into the rail and kicking back towards the nine, but missed, leaving Seaver with an almost identical shot in the opposition direction. Seaver shot the two into the short rail to send it up to the nine, making the two instead of the nine. Seaver continued to run the table and was almost at the finish line.  But left with a tough shot on the seven to get on the eight, Seaver missed the shot and Page ran out to take the match.

The biggest surprise match of the night was the semi-final matchup between Fields and Barnes.  Fields seemed to have the match locked up with Barnes down 6-1.  But a few bad rolls for Fields, a few good rolls for Barnes, not to mention that Barnes has been playing strong and came to play with a “never say die” attitude on Saturday – Barnes refused to give up, came back to force a double-hill game and ultimately won match.

Nail-biting finals

The final match between Page and Barnes was like a see-saw.  Barnes was quick up two games, making an incredible long rail cut shot on the 9-ball with almost no angle on the nine. In game three Barnes undercut an 8-ball allowing Page to get on the board. Barnes broke next but came up dry, leaving Page an easy shot on the one, followed by a combo shot on the 2-9, tying the match 2-2. Barnes took the next game, and then Page combed again, score 3-3.  Ball back in the Barnes’ court made the match 4-3, then in game eight, Page played safe, and with the two-nine tied up on the opposite rail Barnes responded with an incredible ESPN kick shot of the day hitting the two and sending the nine into the pocket, 5-3.  Page won the next game, and then ran out to the 8-ball, made the eight and ended up with the cue ball on the rail for a long cut shot with the 9-ball on the opposite rail. A tough shot for even the most seasoned pro, Page missed and left Barnes out.  Score 6-4. The next game Barnes missed and left Page out, score 6-5.  In the next game, Barnes broke and made two balls. Missing a straight in long rail shot, Page was back at the table with a chance to tie the match. But left with a tough shot to make or even play safe, Page missed and Barnes ran the rest of the table for the game and the match.

Jeannie Seaver’s 3rd place finish guaranteed her spot as the FBT highest points finisher and the 2011 Flamingo Billiards Tour Champion.  Seaver received Nick Varner‘s new Air Jump Cue.  A third place finish was also good enough for Chris Fields to secure the 2012 WPBA Exemption.

Susan Martin was recognized as the Most Improved Player Award.  Janis Sessions was recognized with the Most Valuable Player Award, as the value that she brings to the FBT goes above and beyond in helping to promote and support the tour. Janis has brought several new players; she raises money for the FBT breast cancer fundraiser, and goes out of her way to publicize the FBT, not only by word of mouth but by word of car!

Soash wins Ladies Open side-by-side tournament

In a side-by-side event, Margie Soash (pictured below on the left) won the 8-Ball/9-Ball tournament. Juliette Watier (pictured below right) finished second, and Christina Terlizzi finished third.

Many thanks to room owners Mike Bradford and Joe Sistarelli, (www.billiardcommunity.com), (www.slatebilliards.com) for being great hosts and supporters of the Flamingo Billiards Tour. Thanks also to the legendary Nick Varner and to Boynton Billiards, for supporting the Flamingo Billiards Tour.  Our thanks also goes out to Ultimate Billiards in Ft. Pierce, Florida, and to Amy’s Billiards in Stuart, Florida, for their continued support.  And of course thanks to all of the women who came out to compete and support the tour.  See you next year!

Christine Terlizzi Wins First Mini-Tour Event

West Palm Beach, FL (Nov. 5, 2011) – Christina Terlizzi of Stuart, Florida, won her first tournament at the Flamingo Billiards Tour 8-Ball/9-Ball Mini-Tour event on Saturday at Grover’s Billiards in West Palm Beach, Florida.  Christina played strong on the winner’s side, sending Jennifer Page and Nicole Martino to the one-loss side.  However, Valerie Smith stopped Terlizzi as they both vied to make it to the hot seat.

Terlizzi made it back to the finals with a close win over Janis Sessions, who played strong all day ending the day for Carmen Henriquez, Lauren Pickard and Nicole Martino.  Out for revenge, Terlizzi went back and forth with Smith in the final match in a close race to seven.  Ultimately, Smith missed the chance to go double hill, letting Terlizzi take the match and her first win!

Many thanks to Jason Jenkins, owner of Grover’s Billiards for his support of the Flamingo Billiards Tour.
