Parra takes two out of three over Sandifer to capture DFW 9-Ball Tour’s season finale title

Juan Parra tried for a win on the 2019 DFW 9-Ball Tour three times; in May, June and October. His best effort was his first when he finished 3rd. His worst was the last in which he finished in the tie for 13th. At the tour’s season finale, on the weekend of November 16-17, he broke through to record a victory for the first time since he won a stop on the DFW 9-Ball predecessor, the Omega Tour in 2017. Parra had to get by the #2 player on the standings list going into the final event, Greg Sandifer, twice. The $3,000-added event, open only to tour members who’d competed in at least four of the tour’s 11 events in 2019, drew 56 entrants to Rusty’s Billiards in Arlington, TX.

Parra and Sandifer wove their separate ways through the field to arrive at their first meeting, battling for the hot seat. Parra got an opening round bye before defeating Dario Gomez, Donnie Gregory and Curtis Caldwell to arrive at a winners’ side semifinal against Jesus Sorto. Sandifer’s path went through Gert Ehing, Chris Woody Smith, Jud Hunter and Jeff Georges to arrive at his winners’ side semifinal matchup against Amos Bush.

Sandifer gave up only a single rack to Bush in an 8-1 victory that put him into the hot seat match. Parra joined him following his 7-5 win over Sorto. In their first of three, Sandifer claimed the hot seat 8-4.

On the loss side, Sorto picked up Jeff Georges, who, following his defeat at the hands of Sandifer in a winners’ side quarterfinal, had defeated Friday Abismo 7-5 and the #1 competitor in the tour standings, Tim Larson, double hill (7-8). Bush drew Jesse Hernandez, who’d lost his second match, double hill to Sorto, and was in the midst of a six-match, loss-side winning streak that was about to end. Sorto and Hernandez would each fall one match short of a rematch.

In a straight-up race to 7, Georges downed Sorto 7-4. Bush and Hernandez battled to double hill before Bush prevailed to join Georges in the quarterfinals. Bush then won his second straight double hill battle in those quarterfinals.

Both combatants in the semifinals were looking for a rematch in the finals against Sandifer. If the score proved to be any measure of the desire, Parra apparently wanted it more and won handily 7-1.

With Sandifer racing to 8, Parra took the opening set 7-6. He did Sandifer one better in the second set, winning it 7-5 to claim the season finale title.

A Second Chance event drew seven entrants and was won Alberto Nieto Garcia. Billy Guy was runner-up and Rachelle Dytko was third.

In ceremonies following the event, Tim Larson, who’d competed in each of the tour’s 11 events, won two of them and finished as runner-up in a third, was acknowledged as the 2019 Tour Champion. Highway Sigadi won the tour’s 2019 Best Sportsmanship award.

Tour representatives thanked the ownership and staff at Rusty’s Billiards for their hospitality as well as title sponsor Predator Cues, Fort Worth Billiards Super Store, Granite Guyz, Dallas 8-Ball, FargoRate, BCA Pool League, JB Custom Cue Cases, Accu-Rack, CSI and Internet Marketing Solutions. The 2020 DFW 9-Ball Tour season will begin where the 2019 season ended, at Rusty's Billiards in Arlington, TX on the weekend of January 18-19, 2020.

Stanley maintains top spot with undefeated win on the Omega Billiard Tour

Doug Pitts, Jesse Hernandez and Rick Stanley

Rick Stanley came into the 7th stop on the Omega Billiard Tour as its top player, ahead of Mike Voelkering by 70 points. At the end of that July 15-16, $1,700-added event that drew 64 entrants to Open Table in Azle, TX, Stanley had held on to that top spot, with Voelkering, finishing fourth, maintaining his position in second place. Stanley went undefeated through the field to capture the event title.

After four wins each, Stanley and Voelkering went head to head in one of the winners' side semifinals of this most recent event, as Jesse Hernandez (#17 on the tour's rankings list) and Robin Barbour (#16) squared off in the other one. Stanley (racing to 9) sent Voelkering (racing to 7) to the loss side 9-4. Hernandez sent Barbour over 7-3 to join Stanley in the hot seat match. Stanley put an exclamation point onto his victory in the hot seat match by shutting Hernandez out.

Over on the loss side, Voelkering opened his loss-side trek against Fahad Alrawi, who'd defeated Chris Rickman, double hill, and Justin Whitehead 5-2 to reach him. Barbour drew Douglas Pitts, who'd been defeated in the opening round of play and was on a nine-match, loss-side winning streak, that would include, most recently, victories over Jay Murillo 7-1 and Luis Lopez 7-4.

Voelkering and Pitts advanced to the quarterfinals; Voelkering 7-1 over Alrawi, and Pitts, chalking up loss-side win #8, 7-4 over Barbour. Voelkering's opportunity to gain ranking ground on Stanley was spoiled by Pitts, who won his last match of the weekend with a 7-5 win over Voelkering. Hernandez, though, spoiled any hopes Pitts may have been entertaining about an event victory by defeating him 7-2 in the semifinals.

After being shut out in the hot seat match, Hernandez put up a fight in those finals. He managed to chalk up four, but Stanley chalked up his requisite nine, claimed the event title and maintained his top-ranking on the Omega Billiard Tour.

Tour director Melinda Bailey thanked the ownership and staff at Open Table, as well as sponsors Michael Hoang of OMEGA Billiards Supply, FargoRate.com and OB Cues. The next stop on the Omega Billiards Tour, scheduled for Aug. 5-6, will be hosted by Wizards in Richardson, TX.

Greg Sandifer Wins Fourth Omega Billiards Tour Stop of 2015

Greg Sandifer

On the weekend of April 25-26, the Omega Billiards Tour was honored to play at JR Pockets in Denton, Texas.   The players always love playing at JR Pockets as the tables are always newly refelted, food is good, and atmosphere is prime for great pool.  In the end, newly crowned BCAPL Texas State Champ would go undefeated and win the $,1,500 added event with 80 players!

After a great opening day on Saturday, there was still a lot of great competing going on.  By Sunday afternoon, Crispian Ng defeated Dylan Weinheimer 7-3, Marc Brown 7-5, and Willie Speed 7-4 before meeting up with Greg Sandifer.  Greg had defeated Barry Emerson 7-5, David Bell 7-4 and Frank Cherry hill-hill before meeting up with Crispian.  Greg and Crispian went back and forth at first, then Greg led to take the match 7-4.

On the one-loss side, Tony Matthew was fighting hard and defeated many players Sunday to make it to 4th place.  And Frank Cherry was having a great tournament as well and placed an impressive 3rd.  Willie Speed and Barry Emerson would place 5th/6th while Jeremy Jones and Jesse Hernandez filled out the 7th/8th places out of 80 players.  Congrats to Willie Speed for his highest finish yet, along with Tony Matthew and also Frank Cherry!

Crispian would defeat Frank Cherry 7-2 on the one-loss side to then have a rematch with Greg in the finals.  But Greg was playing top-notch and defeated Crispian 7-3 to win his FIRST Omega Billiards Tour stop!

Denny Sneed, Nick Conner, and Tony Sulsar

On the weekend of September 6-7, Nick Conner dominated the field of 81 players and won first place again on the Omega Billiards Tour!  Clicks Billiards in Arlington, TX was the awesome host for the event and everyone had a great time watching and playing good pool all weekend.  This was the 6th stop of the Omega Billiards Tour this year and $1,500 was added again to the prize fund.

Nick Conner placed 2nd at the previous stop in August and 1st at the June event.  So, with September’s win, Nick has pretty much sealed his first place in the Predator Player Points Tracker for the end of the year Rankings!

After a first round bye, Nick defeated David Franklin 7-1, David Josephson 7-1, Juan Parra 7-2, Tony Sulsar 7-5 and then Keith Aikens 7-1 to seal his spot to play in the hotseat against Denny Sneed, whom he defeated 7-2.
Denny Sneed from Midland, Odessa was the farthest traveler and he had his best tournament yet!  He had wins over David Cowell 7-3, hill-hill over Daniel Herring, Cody Wright 7-5, and then stomped local favorite Dylan Weinheimer 7-0.

Last year’s Tour Champion, Tony Sulsar, after his loss to Nick, went on a tear on the one-loss side with wins over Cody Wright 8-5, Jesse Hernandez 8-0, and Dylan Weinheimer 8-1.  Daniel Herring got close to stopping Tony but at hill-hill, Tony prevailed over another match to keep going.

Tony then defeated Denny Sneed 8-1, giving Denny his highest finish yet at 3rd place!

This lead to Tony and Nick battling it out in the finals.  It was close all the way with GREAT play as usual from these two fantastic players but Nick prevailed 7-4 to capture his second First Place win on the Omega Tour!  Nick earned $925 for first place, Tony earned $530 and Denny nabbed $400.

Big shout out to Keith Aikens for a great 5th place finish and Casey Calame for an awesome 7th place – their highest finishes yet on the Omega Tour.

Barry Emerson Captures His First Omega Billiard

Nick Conner, William Howard, and Barry Emerson

On the weekend of August 2-3, local player and top pick Barry Emerson finally claimed his first Omega Billiards Tour stop!  He went undefeated through 80 players to win the top prize at the fifth stop of the $1,500-added 2014 Omega Billiards Tour event held at Wizards in Richardson, TX.

Barry Emerson (owner of Pro Billiards Service) made his way to the finals with wins over Bob St John (8-1), Jesse Hernandez (8-1), Doug Winnett (8-6) and Wes McCarson (8-5) to make it to Sunday.  On Sunday morning he defeated Phillip Palmer 8-3, and Crispian Ng 8-4 to then play for the hotseat.  His hotseat opponent would be William Howard who found himself for the first time in the hotseat of an Omega Tour event!

Nick Conner (the previous Omega Tour event winner) had lost Saturday night but was ready Sunday for sure.  He sailed through the one-loss side with wins over Jess Hernandez (7-4), Matt DeVance (7-4), Jim Colling (7-2) Chris Ferguson (7-3), Crispian Ng (7-5) and then over newcomer to the tour Randy Morrow (7-3).

William Howard lost to a determined Barry Emerson in the hotseat 8-2 and then lost to Nick Conner 7-3.  But William placed a very impressive 3rd place!

This allowed Nick and Barry to battle it out in the finals.  Barry started off strong but Nick was making a comeback.  But Barry stopped that and won 8-4 to seal his first win and first place!  Barry earned $925 for first place and Nick gathered up $530 for second place.

In the finals, it looked like it would be pushed to two sets, as Tony Sulsar was ahead 7-2.  But Anthony kept his composure and kept fighting back until the score was hill-hill.  Anthony broke, and then ran out for the win!  Hill-hill thriller and his FIRST Omega Billiards Tour title!!

Congratulations to ALL the players for their fine play and great finishes!

Amos Bush Wins His First Omega Billiards Tour Stop

Amos Bush

On the weekend of August 3rd-4th, Amos Bush not only won the Omega Billiards Tour's 5th stop of 2013 at Clicks Billiards in Arlington, TX, he did after losing his very first match!  Winning 12 straight matches in a row, including a double dip in the finals, Amos captured the first place prize and moved himself squarely into the top 5 Rankings!

Amos lost his very first match to the always formidable Jesse Hernandez 7-4.   But that didn’t stop him – he went on a rampage and defeated Jim Colling 8-5, Anthony Shea 8-0, Willie Speed 8-4 and Jeff Georges 8-3 to make it to Sunday.  On Sunday he defeated Shannon Modesitt 8-4 then Corey Flud 8-0.  He then ran into a determined Tony Sulsar (winner of the last two stops), and that match went hill-hill with Amos coming out on top 8-7.  Then Amos had a rematch with Jesse and won 8-4, and also toppled over the always-tough Crispian Ng (newly BCAPL Nationals 9-Ball Champ) 8-5 and then Mike Voelkering 8-5 to earn a spot in the finals.

Mike Voelkering had another fantastic tournament placing 3rd.  He made it into the hotseat match with only one opponent getting over 3 games against him.  In the hotseat match, a heartbreaker carom on the 9 barely hung in the pocket for an almost hill-hill match.  He fought hard against Amos in the semi-final but Amos was shooting good all weekend, also, and Amos won 8-5.  Congrat’s to Mike for placing 3rd!

Undefeated till the finals was a determined Jack Lynch (known as “Jersey Jack”).  He had an excellent tournament and defeated a lot of good players to get to the finals!  He had wins over Tony Matthew 7-1, Danny Williams 7-6, Dylan Weinheimer 7-5, Corey FLud 7-3, Walter Huenerfuerst 7-2 and Mike Voelkering 7-5 where he then waited for Amos to make his way for the final match-up.

In the finals, Amos caught a gear and won the first set 8-1.  In the second set, Jersey was able to capture 4 games, but again Amos prevailed and won the second set 8-4.  Amos earned $560 plus a beautiful Lucasi cue for First Place and Jersey earned $450 for Second.  Mike earned $300 for 3rd place (payouts do not reflect the Player Auction).

A BIG shout out to newcomer Walter Huenerfuerst for placing 5th in his first Omega Billiards Tour event and also to Robert Sifuentes who might now be considered the “Giant Killer” as he got past several high-ranked players to place an impressive 7th place – his highest finish yet!

The Predator Player Points Tracker is for sure tested now with only one more stop left for the season to see who wins the coveted Predator prizes at Season Finale!  Tony Sulsar remains in 1st place, with Crispian Ng in 2nd and Mike Voelkering moving up to 3rd.  The top 3 ranked players earn Predator Prizes at the end of the year and everyone is anxious and ready to place higher and higher in the stops to move up on the list!  CSI / BCAPL are giving free entries to the 2014 BCAPL Nationals for players ranked 4th-8th at the end of the year, also.  Thank you to our additional sponsors, OB Cues, Irving Ink and Thread, Lucasi Cues, Players Cues, AZBilliards.com, and BilliardsPress.com.

The last stop on the Omega Billiards Tour is scheduled for October 5-6 at Speed’s Billiards in Arlington, TX.  All of the six events for 2013 on the Omega Billiard Tour's inaugural season have been filled to their 64-player capacity, with a 60+ waiting list!  Pool is alive and thriving in Texas!!

Thank you to all the players, fans, sponsors and pool rooms!!!

Tony Sulsar Makes it Two in a Row

Sky Massingill, Dylan Weinheimer and Tony Sulsar

On the weekend of June 22nd-23rd, Tony Sulsar claimed the top prize on the newly inaugurated Omega Billiards Tour's 4th stop of 2013 at Rusty’s Billiards in Fort Worth, TX.  Tony has now won his second Omega tournament in a row!  Over $8,000 was given out in monies and prizes this weekend! (Tourney payouts + prizes + player’s auction.)  Here is how it all went down….

At last month's tournament, Tony Sulsar went undefeated to win the tourney, but this time his road to the finals was derailed by a determined Sky Massingill which stopped Tony getting to the hotseat match undefeated.  Sky would have a fabulous tournament defeating William Howard, Adam Pontious, Charlie Smith, Willy Orozco, and then Tony to meet local Dylan Weinheimer in the hotseat.  Dylan, who is a beast on the table, proved that easily by winning over Sam Hargrove, Vince Miller, the always formidable Greg Sandifer, consistent Mike Voelkering, and David Josephson.  He then prevailed with a hill-hill win over Sky in the rocking chair to have a seat in the finals.

Tony would make an impact on the one-loss side by first defeating the talented Barry Emerson hill-hill, Curtis Cardwell, and then Sky to secure his spot in the finals.  Brian Anderson and Greg Sandifer both placed 7th/8th and had a great tournament.  Barry and David Josephson would place an impressive 5th/6th (their highest finish yet) and Curtis had a fantastic event placing 4th!  Sky would also have his highest finish to date placing 3rd and we know he will be in the winner’s circle soon on the Omega Tour.

In the finals, Dylan and Tony had their work cut out for them.  On this handicapped tour, they both race to 8 (the handicaps range from 5 to 9) and the fans were in for a treat as both players performed very well with their smooth strokes and excellent cue ball control!  One could not help but improve their game just by watching these two players.  The first set was a nail biter and went hill-hill.  The second set was not as close, but still fantastic play with Tony coming out on top and winning 8-4.  Dylan placed an impressive 2nd place while Tony captured the first place monies, including a beautiful Lucasi Hybrid cue.  Tony’s long day came to an end around midnight after capturing the coveted 1st place crown.  A BIG congrats to all the players!  There were several new faces and numerous high finishes for the tour’s regulars.

The Predator Player Points Tracker will be tested for only two more stops to see who wins the coveted Predator prizes at the end of the year!  Tony Sulsar now sits in 1st place, with Crispian Ng in 2nd and Jesse Hernandez in 3rd.

Tour Directors Melinda Bailey and Brian Anderson would like to thank Rusty’s Billiards and their awesome staff for their great hospitality all weekend!  A big thank you also goes out to Michael Hoang, who is the main sponsor of the Tour and owner of Omega Billiards Supply in Hurst, TX.  Michael and Omega Billiards supply are well known for the huge booths at many of the large tournaments across the country. The next (fifth) stop on the Omega Billiards Tour is scheduled for August 3-4 at Clicks Billiards in Arlington, TX.  All of the six events for 2013 on the Omega Billiard Tour's inaugural season have been filled to their 64-player capacity, with a 50+ waiting list!  Pool is alive and thriving in Texas!!
