World Classic Billiards field cut in half

Mario Tolentino

The 2003 World Classic Billiards event in Fujairah began competition on Wednesday night and the usual stars shone through the first round. This single elimination tournament means that every match is critical as a single loss marks the end of the tournament for that player.

So one-half of the field has been eliminated from play while the other half continues to fight another day. Victors from day one include international superstars such as Efren Reyes, Francisco Bustamante, Earl Strickland, Thorsten Hohmann and Ralf Souquet.

One new name has risen to the fore. Mario Tolentino of the United Arab Emirates blasted through Spain's David Alcaide 11-5 to keep the dreams of the UAE alive. He joins a cast of only 16 players left in the field to continue the battle on Friday.

With two rounds being played today at the Fujairah Exhibition Hall, by the end of the evening only four men will remain standing. Competition begins Thursday at 5:00 PM. The public is invited to attend.
