Helvik and Sini Take the Final Gold Medals In 9-Ball Individuals

Ricardo Sini and Ine Helvik

The titles at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors & Ladies 2019 9-ball have been awarded today. Ine Helvik (NOR) and Ricardo Sini (ITA) have snatched the last two remaining titles.

The final in the seniors 9-ball division was played between Ricardo Sini and Sami Karttunen (FIN). Sini had a furious start and ran away with a 4:1 score after 5 racks played. But then he started committing several unforced errors which brought Karttunen back into the match. After 9 racks played, the Finish was even leading 5:4 over Sini. Throughout the whole match, Sini had the better break shot but his easy mistakes almost cost him the match. He recovered after rack 9 and got back to his earlier shape, winning the match with 8:5 over Karttunen. This was mainly since Sini got the breaks right and Karttunen had some unfortunate scratches in the latter stage of the match.

Wessel tried to recover but Helvik played too strong and too consistent for her today. 6:3 was the final result which brought the title to Helvik in the ladies final match.

Mutto over Peeters in Euro Seniors 9-Ball

Mahmut Mutto

Mahmut Mutto (SWE) ousted Rene Peeters (NED) in the round of 16 players of the seniors 9-ball at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors & Ladies 2019.

The match was a heartbreaker. Neither player was able to take control of the match and found themsevles tied at 7-7. Peeters had the break shot but he came up dry. A safety battle evolved with Peeters playing a good shot at the 1-ball. However, he mistakenly pocketed the 1-ball and had to play a safety on the 2-ball. Mutto hit it and left a tough shot for Peeters who tried to pocket it. He failed and Mutto took his chance to run the table, winning the match 8-7 over Peeters, booking his seat in the quarterfinal tomorrow.

Earlier today in the round of the last 32 players single elimination, Sascha Specchia (SUI) met Jesse Thehu (NED). That was a rematch from the straight pool finals last week, which was just won by Thehu. Specchia had a score to settle from that match, and in the beginning of the match it looked like he was on his way to do exactly that. He took the first 3 consecutive racks and came to a 3-0 lead without much effort. Rack four then went to Thehu. But Specchia dominated the match while things did not fall into place for Thehu. After 8 racks played, Specchia was on the hill with a nice 7-1 lead over Thehu. With one more rack going to Thehu’s account, Specchia ended the road for his Dutch opponent in the next rack and won the match with a clear 8-2 result. He advanced to the round of 16 players where he met David Larsson (SWE). In that match, Specchia had definitely more work to do but in the end came up with a nice 8-6 win which took him to the quarterfinals of the 9-ball individuals.

In the ladies division, Ine Helvik (NOR) and Susanne Wessel (GER) are through to the semi-finals. Helvik defeated Ann-Sofie Lofgren (SWE) 6-4 while Wessel overpowered Karin Michl (GER) 6-1. The other two seats for the semi-finals will be decided in the matches between Tuuliina Panula (FIN) v Karin Michl and Nicole Kaldewey (GER) v Ann-Sofie Lofgren. These matches will be played tomorrow morning at 11:00 CET.

The other two matches were very close. Earlier today, several round of the 8-ball individuals were played. One interesting match was the clash between Jim Telfer (NED) and Mats Elfroos (SWE). Nerves were getting the better of both players early on as they both missed easy shots. It was Telfer however, who found his rhythm first and took control of the match. Elfroos couldn't put up much of a fight against Telfer and in the end, the final score was a clear 7-2 result that put Telfer to the round of the 32 player single elimination while Elfroos needs another victory on the loser’s side.

Hehre and Karabiyik Go For Gold In Euro 8-Ball Championship

Anja Hehre and Aygun Karabiyik

The 8-ball individuals have been decided at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors & Ladies 2019. Anja Hehre (GER) and Aygun Karabiyik (SUI) have taken the titles in their respective divisions.

Aygun Karabiyik had a grueling day on the way to the title. After having ousted all three Portuguese players, he also eliminated Jesse Thehu (NED) with a lopsided 7-2 scoreline in the semi-final. Karabiyik faced a very tough Michael Stark (AUT) in the final match. Stark had also eliminated several players earlier as well but not with results as decisive as Karabiyik. The final match went mostly as expected with Karabiyik taking an early lead and looking to be on his way to an easy title. At 4-1 though, Karabiyik committed several unforced errors which brought Stark back into the match. Stark fought back to within one rack at 5-4 and took his time-out. When he came back, he broke but lost his cue ball and could not do anything with it. Karabiyik capitalised on that situation and cleared the table with one more point needed for the Championship. That point would come in the next rack when Karabiyik won a safety battle over Stark to win the match and the well deserved title.

Even though Hehre was down 0-2 and 2-3, she managed to overpower her Italian opponent and eventually come up with a nice 5:3 victory which brought her the title.

Mario He Keeps the Trophy in Austria

Mario He, winner of the Dynamic Billard Klagenfurt Open 2018

Mario He (AUT) just won the Dynamic Billard Klagenfurt Open 2018 at the Sportpark Klagenfurt with a 9:8 victory in the final match against Mark Gray (GBR).

The final match was packed with thrilling shots and exciting strategy. Both players are excellent shotmakers and the final match was a collection of superb performance and high class pool billiards. With a few ups and downs for both players, the match came to hill-hill with Mario He being on the break shot. He fired the opening shot of rack #17 and to his disliking, no ball was pocketed. Gray got to the table and pocketed the 1-ball with a long and precise shot. He got to the 5-ball which was frozen to the 9-ball and thus not playable for him. He attempted a safety shot but left a long pot for Mario He. However, since the 6-ball and the7-ball were lying close together, he was not too afraid. But Mario He not only pocketed the 5-ball but also opened up the 6-ball and the 7-ball with the cue ball. He then elevated his cue stick and pocketed the 6-ball with a masse shot. The remaining three balls were just business as usual for the Austrian, who won the match 9:8 and took the title of the Dynamic Billard Klagenfurt Open winner 2018.

„Mark Gray has never lost a final match in the Euro-Tour. He won 6 out of 6 until today. But that did not worry me too much since I knew that I could win if I can play up to me expectations“, mentioned a modest Mario He. On his facebook page, Mario He wrote: „I‘m over the moon and so happy to win the Euro-Tour here in Klagenfurt, my 4th Euro-Tour win and feels still same like the first one. Can‘t describe how the pressure, sadness, happiness in all matches and single moments were.“

After this tournament, Eklent Kaci (ALB) will still lead the Euro-Tour Rankings with 20 points over Mario He who is now in second place.

Echeverria Upsets Hometown Audience In Veldhoven

Ine Helvik (left) and Iker-Andoni Echeverria

It is really hard to speak of „surprises“ or „upsets“ in this stage of the Dynamic Billard European Pool Championships since there are so many top names in the event where everybody could beat everybody. Except one exception in the men’s division which will be described in the following. However, Mieszko Fortunski’s (POL) victory with 8:7 over BCA Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet (GER) is definitely worth mentioning. Two rounds later, Joshua Filler (GER) took revenge on Fortunski for his friend Souquet and eliminated the Polish with 8:3. Filler’s opponent in the quarter-final will be Tomasz Kaplan (POL) who might be up in turn to take revenge on him now. Kaplan eliminated Francisco Diaz-Pizarro (ESP) in an epic thriller with 8:7 earlier. Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) managed to break the run of defending Champion Marc Bijsterbosch (NED). He overpowered him with 8:5 and will now face his teammate Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) in the next round. Albin Ouschan (AUT) is up against total surprise player Iker-Andoni Echeverria (ESP) in the quarter-final. The Spaniard shocked the hometown audience and ousted their local hero Niels Feijen (NED) 8:6. That was probably „the“ surprise of the day today! Feijen was already 6:4 up in the match and everybody expected the Dutch to make it through the match relatively easy. But Echeverria was a tough piece of work for „The Terminator“. Too tough, as it was to turn out. Echeverria took the next four consecutive racks from Feijen and rode the winning wave with 8:6 over the Dutch #1 player.

In the youth division, matches went mostly as expected. The Under 19’s are once more dominated by Sanjin Pehlivanovic (BIH), Wiktor Zielinski (POL), Mustafa Alnar (TNC) and Jan Van Lierop (NED). Though they are still so young, they all have a tremendous amount of experience and use it to get the needed advantage over their opponents. Jonas Souto (ESP) might be a contender to keep an eye on in that division. Among the Under 17’s, Ivan Galic (CRO) is still left in the field while his younger brother Luka was ousted by Arseniy Kovalerchik (RUS) 6:3. Together with Ivan Galic, Quinten Pongers (NED), Christoffer Lentz (DEN) and Moritz Neuhausen (GER) are the athletes „on fire“ in that division. In the girls’ competition, Darya Siranchuk (UKR) was the #1 seeded player but received two whippings back to back. On the winner’s side, she fell to Daria Cheprasova (BLR) with 3:5. Then, she straight away lost to Viktoria Gurova (RUS) 1:5 even. Out of eight remains athletes, two come from Belarus and two from Russia. This division is definitely dominated by the Eastern members these days.

In the women’s division, the #1 seeded player got eliminated today. Ana Gradisnik (SLO) was clearly ousted by Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) 3:6 in the round of the last 16 players. In the same round, the two „big ones“ in the women’s field also had to struggle to overcome their opponents. Kristina Tkach (RUS) was already down 0:3 against Pia Filler (GER), when Filler started losing her game. She made errors in positioning as well as pocketing the balls which Tkach capitalised from in her usual effective way. those mistakes made Tkach grew stronger and she turned the match around completely, throwing Filler out of the 10-ball event with 6:3 in the end. Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) also was trailing big time against Eylul Kibaroglu (TUR) with 2:4 in a race to 6. But also Kibaroglu started to feel the heat in the match against the favoured Austrian and showed some weaknesses towards the end of the match. She ran out of position in rack 7 which she should have won easily but completely ran out of position for the 7-ball so Ouschan could make the point. Ouschan’s experience definitely helped her a lot to turn the tide in that match. She did not allow Kibaroglu to the table too many times anymore and grabbed all remaining racks for her to win this encounter with 6:4 and advance to the quarter-finals where seh will have to deal with Kateryna Polovinchuk (UKR).

The seniors and ladies are also down to the quarter-finals by now. Sandor Tot (HUN) ended Reiner Wirsbitzki’s (GER) hopes for another title in 10-ball by smashing him 7:1 in the round before. Together with Henrique Correia (POR), Tot is the hottest challenger for the title now. Ine Helvik (NOR), defending Champion in the Ladies’ division, did her work so far and will face Ann-Sofie Lofgren (SWE) in the quarter-final round. Amazingly, Helvik as the treasurer of the EPBF has to work all through the day but still seems to find the time and the energy to perform on the highest level of the game and be a tough piece of work for her opponents.

In the wheelchair division, only four matches in the loser’s qualification round took place today. Probably the biggest surprise was Tony Southern (GBR) ousting multi-time Champion Henrik Larsson (SWE) with 5:3. Defending Champion Kurt Deklerck (BEL) just made it to the quarter-finals over the loser’s side with a close 5:4 victory over Kim-Ronny Nygaard (NOR).

The last round of the day was a team competition round. The first team matches were completed. The team competition always creates a special atmosphere among the audience. It seems that routing for countries and national teams is more uniting the different groups of supporters here in the NH Conference Centre Koningshof in Veldhoven, The Netherlands. All results can be found on the event website at www.europeanpoolchampionships.eu

Ralf did it again

Ralf Souquet (GER), taking his 23rd victory at Euro-Tour events

The Dynamic Billard Klagenfurt Open are over and have a deserved winner. Ralf Souquet (GER) defeated Sebastian Ludwig (GER) in an exciting final with 9:6 and came up with an amazing comeback.

The final match did not start well for Souquet. The German BCA Hall of Famer had two balls down each in his first two break shots but no other ball touched the head string so he had to give the open table to Ludwig who cleared it and like that achieved a nice 3:0 lead over Souquet.  In the next rack, Ludwig broke dry but Souquet missed the 1-ball. With this chance given, Ludwig increased the lead to 4:0. It took 5 racks to be played before Souquet got the chance to open his account and win his first rack to get to 4:1. As the match went along, Souquet got a bit better into the match and after 9 racks, the score was 5:4 in favour of Ludwig still. With his own break shot coming up, Ludwig decided to go for a timeout and get his things together again in order to maintain his lead over „The Kaiser“ and make it over the finish line first. But the tide has turned and fortune was reversed in the match. This time, Ludwig had two balls down on the break but the shot was illegal since no other ball broke the head string. Souquet used the chance and cleared the rack to get to 5:5. He even managed to win 3 more consecutive racks to get on the hill with 8:5. This after having trailed 1:5 in the match. What an amazing turnover from Souquet. He allowed one more point fro Ludwig who could not find any remedy against Souquet in the match anymore. In rack 15, Souquet used his chance and took the match with 9:6 to win his 23rd Euro-Tour tournament in his career! His experience and his perfection in his game made the difference today and brought him to this stellar success. This victory catapults Souquet into 2nd place of the new Euro-Tour rankings, trailing David Alcide (ESP) by 15 points only.

In the Klagenfurt Women Open, three players can be considered as highly favoured to win the event. One of course is Jasmin Ouschan (AUT). The Austrian superstar is always favoured in any women’s event. Here, she additionally performs on her home turf with the crowd backing her up big time. She might be thankful for that support since she had an injury to overcome from a bicycle accident a few weeks ago. Jasmin on her first match very convincingly with 7:3 over Ann-Sofie Lofgren (SWE). In her next match in the winner’s qualification round she made short work of Ewa Bak (POL), handing her a 7:1 defeat.

The next favourite is Kristina Tkach (RUS). The young Russian is a permanent component in European women’s pool and  is the current #1 ranked player in the women’s ranking. Today, she had a tough job and hard work with Ana Gradisnik (SLO) who gave her a fierce fight in her first match. After 13 racks, Tkach was able to come out as a 7:6 victor over Gradisnik. After that she finished Ine Helvik (NOR) with 7:3 after having trailed 0:3 in the match.

A special appearance here in Klagenfurt has China’s World Games Gold Medallist Chen Siming (CHN). The superstar from Asia already stirred up some smoke in the open event by defeating several male players. Today, she started in the women’s event with a 7:2 victory over local Lisa Stadler (AUT). Then, she took down experienced Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) with 7:1 even. In her third match for the day, Siming took down Eylul Kibaroglu (TUR) 7:4.

Massive Norwegian victory in Leende today

Ine Helvik and Vegar Kristiansen (both NOR)

The next medals have been awarded at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands. Vegar Kristiansen (NOR) and Ine Helvik (NOR) took the titles in the 10-ball division. Three out of a total of 8 medals including both titles went to Norway today.

The final match in the seniors division was as fiercely fought over as expected. Reiner Wirsbitzki (GER) as well as Vegar Kristiansen (NOR) both have a lot of experience and several titles under their belt. In total, they have won 7 titles and won 24 medals on former European Championships. So this time, a real favourite could not be spotted at all before the match. And the match confirmed that assumption. They both took racks in turn and their play was determined by a lot of tactical and safety elements. In the end, Kristiansen turned out to be the stronger player today. His safety play as well as his pocketing skills outmastered Wirsbitzki. He took three consecutive racks and made 8:5 the final score in his favour. Kristiansen seemed to have more power left in the end of the match.

In the ladies division, EPBF Board member Ine Helvik started out as strong as she performed in the semi-final match earlier today where she clearly wiped the floor with her opponent Wienke Thamsen (GER) and won 6:1. Her opponent in the final match, Nathalie Rohmer (FRA) had a bit more work to do. She needed 9 racks before she was able to finish Barbara Bolfelli (ITA) 6:3. In the final, Helvik continued as dominant as she played in the semis and even before that while Rohmer missed a few shots too many. Consequently, after 5 racks the scoreboard displayed a 4:1 lead for Helvik. But the match was not over yet. Rohmer pulled one rack back from Helvik but the Norwegian had a straight answer for her, winning the next rack and getting on the hill at 5:2. Helvik was at the table with her own break coming up. She had some balls down and a nice layout in front of her. She went ahead and played that rack rock solid. However, her nerves obviously played a trick on her when she dogged the 10-ball and left a long shot for Rohmer. The French also missed the 10-ball and left it for Helvik who pocketed it and crowned her strong performance with her first title on a European Championship level ever.

Kremenovic through to last 16 in senior’s 10-ball

Miroslav Kremenovic (SRB)

At the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands, Miroslav Kremenovic (SRB) ousted big guns Dirk Stenten (GER) 7:2 in the single elimination round of the last 32 players.

Kremenovic has been a bit of an underdog for clear reasons. First of all, Stenten has played the final match of the seniors straight pool last night and won the silver medal in that competition. Secondly, Serbia has just entered the European Pocket Billiard Federation and is a brand new member. For these two reasons, the advantage was definitely pointing towards Stenten. But sometimes life does not follow statistics or rules. This was exactly the case in that match today. Kremenovic got a strong start and took the first two racks. He nearly did not miss a shot. Stenten was able to win the third rack to turn the score 2:1 for Kremenovic. Then the Serbian shifted into overdrive and won another three consecutive racks to go to 5:1 before Stenten scored another point to make it 5:2. These two racks were all that Kremenovic was ready to give to Stenten today. He scored another two and proceeded into the round of the last 16 players seniors 10-ball individuals where he will face Czaba Nagy (HUN) in his next match.

In the ladies division, Nathalie Rohmer (FRA), Barbara Bolfelli (ITA), Patrizia Ignesti (ITA) and Cristina Moscetti (ITA) are already through to the quarterfinals. This demonstrates the strength of the Italian contingency this year in the ladies division at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands. The opponents for the quarterfinals will be decided first round tomorrow in the following encounters:
Ine Helvik (NOR) v Ilona Zalmanova (CZE)
Alexandra Cunha (POR) v Stella Julien (FRA)
Lidia Moreira (POR) v Ann-Sofie Lofgren (SWE)
Wienke Thamsen (GER) v Karin Michl (GER)

Later this evening, two rounds of team competition have been played. In an epic thriller, team Germany defeated team Italy 2:1. All three matches were hill-hill results. While Dirk Stenten (GER) took the 8-ball match 7:6 for Germany, Marcello Valoroso (ITA) won the 9-ball 8:7 over Guido Gerber (GER). At 6:6 in the 10-ball, Danilo Cipriani (ITA) missed the deciding shot and left the 10-ball hanging over the pocket for Reiner Wirsbitzki (GER) who took the victory for team Germany. In the ladies team competition, team Portugal defeated team Sweden 2:1 after a shootout.

Thehu wins seniors straight pool

Jesse Thehu (NED)

The Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands, have produced the first title holder. Jesse Thehu (NED) won the Gold Medal after an exciting final match with 100:84 over Dirk Stenten (GER).

The final match featured two players which were not necessarily expected in there before the event. Dirk Stenten has two silver medals on European level: 9-ball pupils in 1986 and 8-ball seniors in 2015. Jesse Thehu has won a gold medal in seniors 8-ball in 2012 and 5 other medals, all in the seniors division. However, the „usual suspects“ such as Reiner Wirsbitzki (GER), Henrique Correia (POR) and defending Champion Vegar Kristiansen (NOR) have all been exited from the event earlier so it came to the showdown between these two underdogs. In the actual match, Thehu had the better start. He got away with the first 20 points but then he missed and allowed Stenten back into the table. The German levelled the match but when he executed the breakable shot at 20:21, Stenten made the ball but scratched so Thehu got back to the table with ball in hand and an open layout. With that gift, Thehu ran another rack and took a 15 point lead at 36:21 when he ran out of position and an exchange of safety shots evolved. Here, Stenten was able to force Thehu to leave him a shot and he used his chance, levelling the match again at 33:36 in favour of Thehu. Suddenly, an interesting scenario happened. Stenten missed a break shot and opened up the whole rack for Thehu. But the Dutch could not benefit from it this time since he miscued. That brought Stenten in the lead. He found his motor and scored 24 consecutive points before he let Thehu back to the table. And he did so in missing an easy shot to the corner pocket. Thehu was given second life by Stenten here at 57:36. And Thehu really made something out of that mistake from Stenten. He got in the zone and remained cool, making point after point. At 92:57 for Thehu, he missed an easy shot on the 9-ball in the side pocket and the story of the match was twisted again. Stenten, who looked like he was already finished, got another chance and got back to an open table this time. Thehu gave back the gift he received a few racks ago. But Stenten ran out of position when the scoreboard displayed 71:92 and left the table to Thehu again. Thehu made another 5 balls but then got no shot after the break. He attempted a safety but left a long and risky shot for Stenten who made that shot and turned the score to 84:97 before he himself missed another break shot. Again, a safety shot exchange took place between the two contestants. Stenten again went for a risky shot which was given to him by Thehu. this time, the German missed it. Thehu ran the remaining three balls and won the match and the title with 100:84 after an exciting final match.
