Kaci over Filler in St. Johann at the Euro-Tour

Eklent Kaci (ALB)

In a thrilling and high class pool match, Eklent Kaci (ALB) took his next title at the Dynamic Billard St. Johann im Pongau Open 2019 by winning the final match over Joshua Filler (GER) with 9:6.

For the first time in a long time now, the #1 seeded player in a Euro-Tour event met the #2 seeded player in the final match. Today, Kaci (#1) and Filler (#2) made that clash come true so high class pool entertainment was guaranteed. And the final match kept the promise and fulfilled the high expectations. Both players played up to their limit, knowing that the winner of that encounter will be the #1 ranked player after this tournament. Players took racks in turn until the scoreboard displayed 5:5. Then, Kaci managed to get a 2-rack advantage over Filler, leading 7:5. Filler got to 7:6 when Kaci answered that and won the next rack himself. With Kaci being on the hill, Joshua Filler broke rack 15 but committed an illegal break. Kaci used that chance and ran the table to win the event and take his next title at the Euro-Tour.

Mike Massey’s Euro-Tour Premiere

Mike Massey and Oliver Ortmann

US trick shot legend Mike Massey (USA) had his premiere appearance in the Euro-Tour in Italy when he played today in the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open.

There are only a few names in the World of pool billiards that almost everybody knows and appreciates. Mike Massey in definitely one of them. Known as the „Tennessee Tarzan“, Massey is famous for his trick shots and entertainment shows on the Pool table. Known not only as a World-Trickshot Champion but also as a great player, Massey made his way to Europe and entertained the spectators in between the semi-finals and the finals of the recently held Dynamic Billard European Championships. Today, he competed in the Euro-Tour for the first time. The 72-year old was not afraid to go into competition against Europe’s best. However today, he could not claim a victory, losing 7:9 to Bruno Ernst (GER) and 4:9 to Juan Antonio Pina-Hidalgo (ESP). Though he could not win a match today, all opponents as well as spectators showed him the utmost respect. Massey will continue his trip through Europe with some appointments in Slovenia.

Another great name from past days is former World 9-ball Champion and BCA Hall of Famer Oliver Ortmann (GER). He easily won his first match today over Mariusz Skoneczny (POL) with 9:5. Then, in his second match he fell to the sharp blade of Ivo Aarts (NED) with 7:9. Late in the evening, Ortmann needed to play his third match of the say against Andrea Milioli (ITA). The Italian was no obstacle for Ortmann who eliminated Milioli with 9:3

Also on the loser’s side already is Albin Ouschan (AUT). The Austrian lost his first match to young star Casper Matikainen (FIN) with 4:9. He then engaged Christian Brehme (GER) and won that match with 9:3

The Dynamic Billard Treviso Open will commence tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET with matches from loser’s round 2.

Grabe takes down Kaci

Left to right: Denis Grabe, Jakub Koniar, Ivo Aarts and Michel Bartol

In an intense but one-sided match, Denis Grabe (EST) took down Eklent Kaci (ALB) with 9:2 in the round of the last 32 players at the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open 2018 and sent the #1 ranked player home.

The match, which was also streamed live and for free on the EPBF Facebook page, took an unexpected turn. Grabe won 5 of the first 6 racks and totally dominated Kaci. That scenario was not expected since in recent tournaments it was Kaci who normally dominated his opponents. The #1 ranked player in Europe and the World seemed to be completely off track in that match. When he scratched in rack 6 trailing 1:4, he smashed his cue stick on the table which led to a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct and a loss of one rack. Kaci took a time-out and tried to compose himself. But somehow it just was not his day today. He kept on missing easy shots and did not get into his game at all. Finally, Grabe ended the slaughtering by winning 9:2 over Kaci and eliminated him from the event.

Other remarkable results from today include Michel Bartol (CRO) ousting Mark Gray (GBR) in the same round with 9:5. That was also a clear as well as unexpected result in that match. Jakub Koniar (SVK) once again came up with a strong performance at the Euro-Tour. Finishing 5th in Klagenfurt last month, Koniar now has again secured himself a spot among the top 16 players of this event, defeating Albin Ouschan (AUT) 9:5 in the round of the last 32 players. Continuing the number of surprises today, Ivo Aarts (NED) defeated his teammate Niels Feijen (NED) by a hair’s breadth with 9:8 and advanced to the round of the final 16 players.

Unfortunately, the day started with a sad story. Austrian top player Mario He had to cancel his further participation in the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open 2018 for personal reasons. He informed the organisers and left before his first match in the morning, forfeiting all other matches in the event. Mario He will have no more chance to overtake Kaci in the rankings anymore. Except Grabe, none of the top ranked guns were able to capture important points in Italy this week.

Friday through Sunday, EPBF will show two feature matches LIVE on the EPBF Facebook page. The complete tournament is shown on kozoom.com for premium pass holders.

Tomorrow morning at 10:00 CET, the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open 2018 will continue with matches from the round of the last 16 players single elimination. At 09:00, the women’s event, the EPBF Treviso Open, will commence.

The event is hosted by the European Governing Body for Pool, the European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) and organised by International Billiard Promotion (IBP).  Play starts Thursday at 09:30 local time, for further information and reference please go to the federation website eurotouronline under the Eurotour tab. Fedor Gorst goes all the way

Fedor Gorst

Fedor Gorst (RUS) has just won the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open 2018 with a thrilling 9:7 victory over Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) in the final match.

It was Gorst’s first appearance in a final match of a Euro-Tour ever today. He made his way over elite players like Petri Makkonen (FIN), Mieszko Fortunski (POL), Ivo Aarts (NED) and Maximilian Lechner (AUT) into the final match. His opponent Mateusz Sniegocki had just played a really tough semi-final against his teammate Tomasz Kaplan (POL) and just sneaked over the finish-line with 9:8. So the clash in the final match was experience versus youth. Sniegocki has already three Euro-Tour titles under his belt and today was his fifth appearance in a final match. Gorst was the newbie. „I had nothing to lose really,“ stated Gorst after the match. „The odds were all in favour of Sniegocki so I could play my game and enjoy the final match“. It seemed as if Gorst was as calm as one could be. „I was nervous“, admitted Gorst, „but I managed to keep my focus on the match and not think about winning my first Euro-Tour title.“ The match was really tight with both players changing in leading the scoreboard. At 7:7, SNiegocki missed an important shot. That brought Gorst to the table who showed no mercy to the experienced Polish and ran two racks, winning the final match with 9:7. „Tomorrow I will probably be happy about my 2nd place today,“ mentioned Sniegocki after the final when asked. „But today I’m suffering because I had my chances to win the match“.

The new Euro-Tour rankings are pretty much dominated by Austrian players. Mario He (#2), Albin Ouschan (#3) and Maximilian Lechner (#8) have all conquered or defended a top ten position. Leader of the rankings is still Eklent Kaci (ALB).

Earlier today, the women started their tournament as well. The EPBF Treviso Open began with a big upset. Current #1 ranked player Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) lost her opening match against Monika Zabek (POL) with 5:7. Zabek was already up 3:1 and 5:3 when Fefilava took her time-out. When she came back, she played better and more focussed and managed to put some pressure on her Polish opponent. But Zabek kept her nerves together and put the match into her account when it was on the razor’s edge at 6:5. After that match, Zabek lost a heartbreaker with 6:7 to Ine Helvik (NOR). She then went to the loser’s side to play Elise Qiu (NED). In that match Zabek played up to her limits. After 12 racks, the score was 6:6. It was Qiu’s break shot coming up. The match was open but Qiu was not able to close the book. She missed the 8-ball and left a long shot for Zabek. The Polish pocketed both 8-ball and 9-ball and proceeded to the single elimination stage. Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) wasted no time with her first opponent, Annika Nilsson (SWE). 7:2 was the clear result in favour of Ouschan at the end of the match. Then she went on and handed the same defeat to her next opponent, Ewa Bak (POL). That victory put Ouschan through to the single elimination stage. She is joined there by current #2 of the Euro-Tour rankings, Kristina Tkach (RUS). In former times, Tkach had less problems to go into the single elimination stage. Today, she found two worthy opponents in Tamara Peeters (NED) and Vania Franco (POR). Tkach was still a bit better than these two and won both matches 7:4 and 7:5 to go to the single elimination stage.

Friday through Sunday, EPBF will show two feature matches LIVE on the EPBF Facebook page. The complete tournament is shown on kozoom.com for premium pass holders.

That concludes the coverage of the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open 2018. Tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET, the EPBF Treviso Open, will continue with matches of the last 16 players single elimination.

Treviso Open – Lechner, He And Ouschan All In The Last 16

Maximilian Lechner (AUT)

The Dynamic Billard BHR Treviso Open 2018 in Italy have been quite successful for the Austrian contingency so far. Three players have made it to the stage of the final 16 out of an initial starting group of 153 players.

Maximilian Lechner (AUT) is probably the biggest surprise of the group. He defeated Ante Sustic (CRO) 9:7 in his first match. Then, his way led him over Reda Belhaj (FRA) 9:2 before he had to give in 5:9 to Sergey Lutsker (RUS) in the winner’s qualification round today. But Lechner stood tall and won the loser’s qualifier with 9:7 over strong junior player Maksim Dudanets (RUS) 9:7. In the first single elimination round, when 32 players were left in the field, Lechner had to deal with Tomasz Kaplan (POL). The Polish is known to be a bit of a surprise box meaning that he has performed from world-class to low-class and everything in between over the recent years. Today, Kaplan’s performance was not good enough while Lechner found his A-game against his experienced opponent. 9:1 was the final result in favour of Lechner who will now play against fellow teammate Mario He (AUT) in the next round.

Mario He eliminated Michal Turkowski (POL) in his single elimination round match with a clear 9:5 result. The „third musketeer“ from Austria, Albin Ouschan (AUT) paved his way into the round of the final 32 players by ousting Ivo Aarts (NED) 9:6. In his next match, the former World Champion will have to face Wojciech Sroczynski (POL) who got the better of one of the last remaining local players from Italy Daniele Corrieri (ITA) 9:2.

In the EPBF BHR Treviso Open which will be launched tomorrow morning, 36 players have enlisted. Out of the top 10 players of the Women’s European Ranking, only Katarzyna Wesolowska from Poland is missing. All other women are here to try and get a shot at the coveted title which is at stake here in Treviso. Current leader of the rankings is Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) who wants to defend her position but opponents like Jasmin Ouschan (AUT), Kristina Tkach (RUS) and Veronika Ivanovskaia (GER) among others will not allow her an easy ride on her journey to glory. It will be interesting to see who will come out strong in the end.

Tomorrow, the event will continue at 10:00 CET with matches from the last 16 players single elimination. At 09:00, the women will start their EPBF BHR Treviso Open with first round matches.

Every day, two matches from the event will be shown LIVE on the Facebook page of the EPBF for free. All Facebook users may check out the high standard of quality which is provided for all the events and see what the Kozoom members receive all the time. Aarts Pipped Feijen to the Post

aarts, Feijen

In the winner’s qualification round of the Dynamic Billard Italian Open, Ivo Aarts (NED) defeated his fellow countryman „The Terminator“ Niels Feijen (NED) in a heartbreaker by a whisker with 9:8.

Both players already had two victories under their belt today when they met on table 10 in the BHR Best Western Hotel in Treviso, Italy. Feijen, currently ranked nr.3 in the Euro-Tour after Gray and Alcaide, made short work with Sergio Lagunas Moreno (ESP) and Mustafa Alnar (TNC). He handed a doughnut to Moreno and only allowed three racks in the account of Alnar. His place in the winner’s qualification round was never in danger at all. Aarts however needed to struggle hard for his spot in that match. He took down Sebastian Staab (GER) 9:4 and then just made it with 9:8 in a fiercely fought over match against Sergey Lutsker (RUS). The odds for the match were pretty obvious: Feijen was the favourite player by a mile. But the course of the match did not follow the odds or the expectations of the audience. In the beginning, Feijen managed to take three consecutive racks against Aarts. But the young Dutch struck back and after eight racks the scoreboard showed 4:4, all square. After his timeout, Aarts seemed to be in the zone and pretty much focussed on his performance. He always allowed Feijen to go ahead with one rack but then pulled the next one back to even the score again. Feijen could try whatever he wanted, he never got an advantage over his teammate. After 12 racks at 6:6, Feijen took his timeout and probably hoped to somehow be able to turn the tide in the match. But the encounter continued as before. One for Feijen and one for Aarts. That led to the inevitable situation at 8:8 after 16 racks. The final rack had to decide the winner. It was Feijen’ break shot. He had two balls down and the break was good  but he had no chance to pocket the 1-ball. To the contrary, the cue ball was hiding partly behind the 5-ball which made it almost impossible for Feijen to attack the table in that situation. Feijen tried a safety but left a possible shot for Aarts. However, it was not easy. The cue ball was at the head rail with the 1-ball close to the foot rail. A thin cut was needed for Aarts. Ivo Aarts pocketed the 1-ball and had position to continue. All balls were nicely spread open and Aarts kept his nerves under control and ran the rack, winning the thrilling match in the deciding rack with 9:8. He advanced to the single elimination round of the last 32 players while Feijen got one more chance on the loser’s side. He will have to deal with Sebastian Staab (GER) there.

Another interesting match from todays’s winner’s qualification round took place between „The Iceman“ Mika Immonen (FIN) and Marco Teutscher (NED). The young Dutch controlled the match from start to beginning and handed a painful defeat to Immonen with 9:6. Immonen went to the loser’s side and ousted local player Daniele Corrieri (ITA) 9:6 for his spot in the last 32. Teutscher avoided the detour and directly booked his seat in the same round.

Several „hot shots“ are still undefeated in the tournament and waiting for their opponents in the single elimination round. Among them are Joshua Filler (GER), Shane Van Boening (USA), Albin Ouschan (AUT), Denis Grabe (EST), Nick Van Den Berg (NED), Francisco Sanchez Ruiz (ESP) and Konstantin Stepanov (RUS), just to name a few. The single elimination round of the last 32 players will be played tonight at 21:00 CET.

Tomorrow, the Dynamic Billard Italian Open will continue at 10:00 CET with matches from the round of the last 16 player single elimination. At 09:00, the Dynamic Billard Italian Women Open will begin with first round matches.

Hard Times for Favorites

Marco Spitzky

Today, many favorite players had a tougher job in front of them than expected at the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open in the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands. Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) for example, long time Euro-Tour powerhouse and currently ranked number 28 in Europe, was ousted by unheralded Marco Spitzky (GER) with 7:9 in loser’s round two.

After yesterday and this afternoon, when Daryl Peach and Nick Van Den Berg went down to their opponents, the run for the dark horses continued here. Stepanov was the next victim of such a constellation. He fell to the sharp blade of Spitzky who made it to the next round on the loser’s side. Stepanov was able to get the better start in the match. The first three racks belonged to him. But then Spitzky seemed to wake up and also started potting balls. When Spitzky even overtook Stepanov, the Russian went for his time-out. But that did not help him. Spitzky always kept his nose in front of Stepanov and reached the finish line first, winning the match 9:7.

Marcus Chamat, „The Napoleon“ from Sweden just escaped that fate in the tournament. After having received a cruel bashing by Max Lechner (AUT) with 2:9 yesterday, Chamat needed to get some wins on the loser’s side. His first opponent was Michal Turkowski (POL) who was not much of an obstacle for Chamat. 9:6 was the final result in favor of the experienced Swede. Then he encountered young Kestutis Zadeikis from Lithuania. The young man showed absolutely no nerves and got Chamat in the back seat from the very beginning of the match. 5:1 and 6:2 were the intermediate results in favor of Zadeikis. But then Chamat fought his way back into the match. After several mistakes from the young Lithuanian, the scoreboard showed 8:8 with Chamat having the break in rack 17. What a drama unfolded! Chamat just had a possible layout and one ball down on his break shot. He deployed all his skill and energy in the rack and ran it, winning the match with the closest of all results 9:8. That just kept Chamat alive in the event, having survived loser’s round two only.

Other remarkable results from today’s loser’s rounds include multiple European and former World Champion Oliver Ortmann (GER) losing his second match against Ivo Aarts (NED) 7:9. That also ends Ortmann’s quest for glory here in Leende this year. Daryl Peach (GBR) made a statement and wiped the floor with Gino de Ruyter (BEL), sending him home 9:0.

Tomorrow, the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open will continue at 09:00 CET with matches from the loser’s round 3.

The Euro-Tour is played on 11 tables which are all streamed LIVE throughout the whole event. In order to be able to follow all the action LIVE, premium membership can be purchased at www.kozoom.com. Appleton successfully defends his American 14:1 Straight Pool title

Darren Appleton

A number of competitors currently at work looking to capture the US Open 9-Ball Championship warmed up from October 22-25, about two hours north, at the $20,000-added, 11th Annual  American 14:1 Straight Pool Championships. The event's last two champions – Darren Appleton (2014) and Thorsten Hohmann (2013) – were among them, and no one was surprised when they turned out to be the 2015 finalists. Appleton completed an undefeated run through the field of 40, with a victory over Hohmann in those finals, to successfully defend the title that he'd claimed last year. Also competing in this event, and presently, at the US Open, were (among others) former 14:1 champions Johnny Archer (2011) and Mika Immonen (2007).

Hosted by Diamond Billiards in Midlothian, VA, and sponsored by Diamond Billiards and Simonis Cloth, the event featured eight 'flights' of round robin play; five players per 'flight.' Eight winners emerged from the initial round robin battles, while 16 players in either second or third place were seeded in an elimination round.

Going undefeated in their round robin play were Appleton, Thorsten Hohmann, Mika Immonen, and Nick Van Den Berg. Joining them among the eight round robin winners were Dennis Orcollo, Ralph Eckert, Johnny Archer and Jason Klatt

On one side of the subsequent elimination bracket, Bob Hunter, Mike Davis, Daryl Peach, and Ivo Aarts advanced past Stevie Moore, Niels Feijen, Karl Boyes, and Alan Duty, respectively. On the other side, Warren Kiamco, Kevin Clark, Rodney Morris, and Danny Barouty, eliminated Jayson Shaw, Sean Morgan, Corey Deuel, and Alex Pagulayan.

With victories in races to 125 by Appleton (over Hunter, 51), Orcollo (over Davis, 62), Immonen (over Peach, 96), Aarts (over Eckert, 78), Kiamco (over Van Den Berg, 71), Clark (over Archer, 76), Hohmann (over Morris, 66), and Barouty (over Klatt, 88), the field was down to eight. It went down to four following Appleton's 150-100 victory over Orcollo, Immonen's defeat of Aarts 150-89, Kiamco's win over Clark 150-26, and Hohmann's elimination of Barouty 150-58

Three of the four left were former champions of the event. Appleton defeated the Iceman 150-113, as Hohmann eliminated the only player who wasn't a former champion, Warren Kiamco, 150-65. In the finals, Hohmann was ahead when the scores were still in double digits, 94-83. Appleton, though, gobbled up that 11-point differential, and went on to win it 150-94.

Dutch Radio DJ Participates in Dynamic Billard Dutch Open

He entered the main arena with a house cue and lost his match to Damianos Giallourakis (GRE) with 0:9…. but it seemed that he was enjoying his time.

The talk is of Frank Dane, a well known Dutch Radio DJ and leisure time pool player. "We love to have a game of 9-ball in between our radio shows“, explained Dane after his match, "and once we were talking about it. We then got a call and me and my friend got invited to this event.“ "Actually, I’m not a pool player at all, everything started from a joke and I just showed up but I must say I really enjoyed my day here. Everyone is so nice and friendly but probably also everyone here would beat me“, added Dane. He was certainly an asset to the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open.

More remarkable results of today include Mateusz Szaszor (POL) defeating favored Nick Malai (GRE) with 9:7. Ralph Eckert (GER) just remained the upper hand over Pawel Misiak (POL), winning with 9:8. Andy Worthington (GBR) got the better of Ivo Aarts (NED) by winning with 9:7. Being 7:8 down, Aarts forfeited the match with 7 balls still remaining on the table.

In the first winner’s round, we had "The Terminator“ Niels Feijen (NED), currently ranked Nr. 1 in the Euro-Tour rankings, snatching his match with 9:3 over Evangelos Vettas (GRE). Feijen’s teammate Nick Van Den Berg (NED) also won with 9:5 over Alan Conway (IRE). Mihai Robert Braga (ROM) delivered a small upset to the event, winning with 9:8 over Karol Skowerski (POL). Young gun Joshua Filler (GER) won his first match clearly by smashing Lars Van Dijk (NED) 9:4. Mark Gray (GBR) took care of Babken Melkonyan (ROM) also with 9:4.
