Chohan & Frost Nab US Open Titles – Biado Takes All-Around

Tony Chohan

After Fedor Gorst and Carlo Biado snapped off the US Open 10 Ball and 8 Ball Championships, the US Open One Pocket and Bank Pool Championship rounded out the action packed series at Griff’s in Las Vegas, NV.

The US Open One Pocket Championship opened with 44 players – the format was alternate break with races to four. After the players auction, players meeting and draw, play commenced.

Opening round action saw Roberto Gomez defeat fellow countryman Edgie Geronimo 4-1 as did Josh Roberts over legendary John Hennigan (“Cornflakes”). Evan Lunda battled it out with recently crowned US Open 8 Ball champ Carlo Biado – Carlo escaped with a 4-3 win. Coming out of retirement, veteran BCA and One Pocket Hall of Famer, Jose Parica, pounded the always tough Tres Kane 4-1.

Next round had Biado sending One Pocket Hall of Famer Scott Frost west 4-2, Ian Costello beating Jim Tomassoni 4-1, Josh Roberts blitzing James Davee 4-0 and Tony Chohan defeating Warren Kiamco 4-2 as did Lee Vann Corteza over Robert Frost by the same score. Roland Garcia smoked young gun Kash Keaton 4-0 and newly minted US Open 10 Ball champ Fedor Gorst sent Gomez packing 4-2.

In the top half of the chart, favorite Justin Hall quietly made his way through the bracket smoking all in his way – Alex Montpelier 4-1, Bart Czapia 4-0 and Lee Vann Corteza, Ronnie Wiseman and Roland Garcia – all 4-1.

After winning his first two matches easily, Roberts breezed past Danny Olson 4-0 and followed that by beating Las Vegas’s own Ian Costello 4-2 and Bob Herchik 4-1.

While Justin & Josh were taking care of business up north, Garcia was destroying the southern part of the chart.

After rolling over his first two matches, Roland tore through Gorst 4-0 and then Chohan 4-2. Garcia finally met his demise at the hands of Hall 4-1.

This set up the hot seat match between Hall and Roberts with Josh easily taking the match 4-1. Justin headed west to await an opponent.

After losing to Garcia earlier in the tournament, Chohan won four in a row on his march towards his match with Hall. He defeated Danny Olson and Tim De Ruyter – both 4-2. Getting stronger as he went, Herchik was next – 4-1 but battled down to the wire with Biado. Tony prevailed 4-3 leaving Carlo in fourth place.

Nothing stopping him now, Hall was next! Down he went 4-2 – Justin finished third.

The undefeated Josh Roberts was waiting for Tony in the one set extended finals. There was no stopping the Chohan train as he steamed to a 5-0 victory! Good tournament, Josh! And congratulations to Tony for his third consecutive one pocket championship and his second US Open One Pocket Championship!

Scott Frost

And finally, the last event of the US Open Championship Series – the US Open Bank Pool Championship! Featuring 48 players, the format was alternate break with races to 5/4. As usual, after a players auction, players meeting and draw, play began.

After drawing a coveted bye, Roberto Gomez shot out of the gate with victories over Kash Keaton 5-0, Fedor Gorst 5-4, Tony Chohan 5-3 and Scott Frost 5-2 to reach the hot seat match.

Fellow Filipino Carlo Biado was doing the same in the bottom half of the chart. He escaped a close one with Caleb Schumacher 5-4 but then defeated Tony Bloom 5-0. He then edged out Chris Lulek, Robert Frost and Stephen Holem – all with 5-4 scores!

Now in dead punch, he smashed Roberto 5-1 to lock up his seat in the finals! Gomez went to the one loss side to await an opponent.

After losing their earlier matches, Stephen Holem and Scott Frost were working their way through the fray and finally bumped heads. Scott put an end to Stephen’s march 4-2 – Holem finished fourth.

Frost then thumped Gomez 4-1 and advanced to the finals! Roberts finished in third place.

Again, the finals were to be one set – an extended race to six.

Facing the undefeated Carlo Biado, Frost had his hands full. Neck and neck until four game apiece, Scott took the lead 5-4 and then won the final game to win this year’s US Open Bank Pool Championship! Congratulations to Scott! Good tournament, Carlo!

And, finally, Carlo Biado was the points leader of all four events so became the All-Around champ for 2022! Congratulations!!!

Down To Last 64 At World Pool Championship

Jasmin Ouschan

The World Pool Championship is down to the last 64 after the conclusion of the double elimination group stage at Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes, live on Sky Sports and DAZN.

Among the high-profile casualties of the group stage were USA’s two-time Mosconi Cup winner Tyler Styer, former US Open Champion Corey Deuel and former World Champion Mika Immonen, who suffered a 7-9 defeat to Ralf Souquet.

Three of the eight female entries have advanced to the last 64 including Women’s World Champion Kelly Fisher. Germany’s Veronika Ivanovskaia went through with wins over Nick Malia and Tim De Ruyter, while Jasmin Ouschan won a hill-hill thriller against Mark Gray from 7-1 down to beat the Brit to a place in the knockout stages.

US Open Champion Joshua Filler came through the losers side of the group brackets win a 9-6 win over Sergey Lutsker, and Mosconi Cup MVP Jayson Shaw also made it through thanks to a 9-6 win over fellow Brit Imran Majid.

Shaw will now face Shane van Boening in a mouth-watering Last-64 clash, which will follow Fedor Gorst against Skyler Woodward on the TV table.

The last 64 begins at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, live on Sky Sports, DAZN and Matchroom.Live. Away from the TV table, matches include Darren Appleton vs Joshua Filler, Alex Kazakis vs Naoyuki Oi and young Bosnian rising star Sanjin Pehlivanovic against Albin Ouschan.

Albin’s sister Jasmin will face Aleksa Pecelj, Fisher is up against Jeremy Sossei and Ivanovskaia will face Max Lechner.

Filler Over Hohmann In All-German Clash

Joshua Filler and Thorsten Hohmann

In an all-German clash of two World Champions at the Dynamic Billard Antalya Open 2019, Joshua Filler (GER) ousted his fellow countryman Thorsten Hohmann (GER) with 9:3.

When the draw was done and the match between Filler and Hohmann was on the board, the expectations grew pretty high from the audience. Both players are former or current World Champions and have both dominated the youth in their respective generation. Today, more experienced Hohmann entered the ring against young Filler who is on fire for quite some time now. Experience against youth, precision against audacity. Who would remain the upper hand in this classy match?! To the liking of Filler, the match completely went for him. His break shot came good, he had decent layouts and ran the table when needed. Hohmann did not play bad but Filler was just better today. Therefore, the end result of 9:3 in favour of Filler is a true display of the course of this match. While Hohmann now has to settle for 17th, Filler will play against Mark Gray (GBR) tomorrow morning at 10:00 local time. Gray ousted Tomasz Kaplan (POL) with an impressive 9:2 tonight. Other remarkable results from that round include Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz (ESP) ended the road for Albin Ouschan (AUT) with 9:2. Sanchez-Ruiz will now meet Wiktor Zielinski (POL) who stood tall against Tim De Ruyter (NED) tonight with 9:5.

Earlier today, one of the biggest oddities in a Euro-Tour event ever happened in Antalya. Darren Appleton (GBR) who defeated Mark Gray yesterday, did not show up for his winner’s qualification round match. After Gray, he also defeated Mohammadhossein Noori (IRI) 9:5 this morning in the 09:00 round. Then he did not show up for this winner’s qualification match against Albin Ouschan (AUT) and forfeited the match. On top of that, he also did not show up for his next match, the loser’s qualification match against Mark Gray again. The worried organisers tried to look for him and in the end it turned out that Appleton simply overslept! „Decided to take a nap around 11-12pm after my match this morning as I’ve slept terrible since I arrived and even worse last night,Set my alarm for 2pm but fell back asleep ! I was due to play at 4.30pm didn’t make that match and 6pm losers Q but didn’t wake up until 6.30pm so got forfeited both matches!! Shit happens!!“ stated Appleton on his facebook page. „Thanks for everyone’s concern that was worried about me and good luck to everyone left in the tournament!“

In the loser’s qualification round, Thorsten Hohmann (GER) went up against Mario He (AUT). Both players are known to be „heavyweights“ in European pool and it was impossible to predict the outcome of that match. So the match went along, confirming that assumption. The tide turned several times in the match. Hohmann was up 6:3 at some stage but Mario He went on the hill first with 8:7. Hohmann struck back and made the match a hill-hill thriller at 8:8. In rack #17, Mario He had the break shot. He pocketed three balls but had a tough shot on the 2-ball. Mario He decided to play a safety on the 2-ball, leaving nothing for Hohmann to capitalise from. The German came up with an even better safety shot, creating a huge problem for He. He put the cue ball in the jaws of a pocket, leaving the 2-ball in the middle of the opposite short rail with several object balls blocking the path. Mario He played a jump shot and hit the 2-ball but left an open shot with a clear layout for Hohmann. Thorsten Hohmann used that chance and ran the rack, winning the match with 9:8 over an unlucky Mario He.

14-Year-Old Yannick Pongers Ousts Feijen

Yannick Pongers (left) and Niels Feijen

Probably the biggest news of today is that 14-year-old Yannick Pongers (NED) ousted "The Terminator" Niels Feijen (NED) from the Dynamic Billard Veldhoven Open 2019 with 9:8.

Earlier today, Feijen had to take a defeat against Marco Dorenburg (GER) with 6:9 already. He then went on to the loser’s side where the Dutch junior player. Pongers was already on the loser’s side and just barely made his way through to the match against Feijen with a 9:8 victory over Jonas Souto (ESP). Before the match, probably everybody including Pongers thought that Feijen would definitely be the player to make it through. He has all these prestigious titles and wins under his belt. But the way the match went prove everybody’s expectations wrong. Young Pongers hung in there and lever allowed Feijen to get a big advantage over him. To the contrary, he used his chances and took the points whenever possible. After 14 racks, the score was 7:7. Feijen executed the break shot and he had a ball down but no shot on the lowest numbered ball. A safety battle evolved where Pongers prove to be the smarter player. He forced Feijen to make a mistake and consequently ran the rack to get on the fill first, taking an 8:7 lead over Feijen. Then in rack 16, Pongers had the break shot. He broke dry with no ball down and even had an illegal break. Since the lowest numbered ball was not available, Feijen handed the table back to Pongers. This time, Feijen had the better end in his favour and was able to win the rack, making the match a hill-hill affair at 8:8 with his own break shot coming up. This time, Feijen broke dry with all balls spread nicely on the table. Pongers decided to go for a safety and this time he lost the safety exchange to Feijen. "The Terminator" had an open table in front of him without any real problem visible. To his horror, he missed an easy 2-ball and left the layout for Pongers. The youngster cleared the table and won the rack and the match with 9:8 over Feijen. In his next match, Yannick Pongers met Damianos Giallourakis (GRE). In that match, the young Dutch was not able to keep up his brilliant performance and lost 6:9 tot he Greek. However, this 49th rank finish can be regarded as a really high achievement of the 14-year-old Pongers.

Other remarkable results include Tim De Ruyter (NED) ousting David Alcaide (ESP) with 9:7. On the winner’s side, Oliver Ortmann (GER) was able to defeat his fellow countryman Ralf Souquet (GER) with 9:6. Then, Ortmann lost a nail biter to Chinakhov with 8:9 and had to go up against German youngster Jacques Wollschlaeger. Here, the youngster was dominant and ended Ortmann’s run in the Dynamic Billard Veldhoven Open 2019, handing him a clear 9:4 defeat. Former World 9-Ball Champion Thorsten "The Hitman" Hohmann (GER) lost his loser’s qualifying round match against Oliver Szolnoki (HUN) with 3:9.

Bustamante Defends Derby City One Pocket Title

Francisco Bustamante – Photo courtesy of Dave Thomson (Mediumpool.com)

Derby City Classic XXI, January 25 – February 2nd, 2019

LIVE from the Horseshoe Southern Indiana Casino, Elizabeth IN.

DIAMOND DCC ONE POCKET CHAMPIONSHIP

RACE to 3. $12,000, $6,000, $3300.

410 entrants are now culled to ONE!

In the final moments of the Derby City Classic One-Pocket Championship, Francisco Bustamante, down zero to two to the courageous Corey Deuel, manifested true grit, and sustained stamina as his never-say-die attitude drove the last ball into his pocket.

The 55-year-old veteran, in his 8th day of the Derby City Classic’s brutal dawn to dawn schedule, now sits atop the leader board in his search for back-to-back All-Around Champion titles…and the additional $20,000 bonus money!

Corey Deuel had an extraordinary day. Not only did he defeat Shane Van Boening and Alex Pagulayan, with three players left he, luckily, drew the bye.  That left a Pagulayan – Bustamante semifinal.

The day had begun with 7 men, mostly, of equal caliber in search of the title. Pagulayan, still undefeated, had two lives. Van Boening, Bustamante, Deuel, Gomez, Gorst, and Orcollo had one.

First, Alex gutted Gomez. Then, Corey equalized Alex obliterating the first of his lives.

Meanwhile, Orcollo got Gorst, only to run afoul of Francisco. That left 3.

In the, aforementioned, semifinal round draw, Corey scored the bye leaving Bustey to face, and ultimately eliminate, Alex.

In the finals, Bustamante’s performance was sublime, even exhilarating. At 2-zero, Corey’s crafty, creative, aggressive cue ball, finally, derailed and left Francisco an opening. Bustey ran a mesmerizing 8 and out.

At 2-1, it was Corey’s break. It was now Bustey’s turn to get creative. With a blistering bank that, intentionally, kissed off a ball into his pocket, Bustey had the audience in awe as he ran another 8 and out. 2-2.

Game 5, the decider: Bustey’s break. Deuel took a timeout.

Recomposed, he approached the table. His attempt at a safe ran a little too far leaving Francisco the finest of cuts into his pocket.

It wobbled back and forth before falling into his pocket. Fortune didn’t favor the brave. He had nothing.

He played safe…he thought. With the courage and foresight that only Corey would adopt in such a foray, he attacked. Out of nowhere, a ball fell in his hole.

He can’t believe it, with the spheres spread far and wide, he too, is left safe. He pocketed a ball to be repotted while sending whitey, safely, towards his opponent’s hole. It rolled high leaving Bustey a sliver of a shot. The ball fell.

His confidence now in full bore. Failure wasn’t an option. With unwavering focus and calm determination, his indomitable spirit rose to the occasion. All Deuel could do is wonder what could have been as, ball by ball, the title slipped away.

But wait, there’s hope. Needing one ball, Bustey’s bust into the cluster didn’t leave a direct shot to his pocket.

Formerly slumped, Corey now sat erect in his seat.

Francisco scanned his options. The remaining balls were openly available to his opponent’s pocket. One error here, and Deuel was more than capable of running out the rack…and stealing the title.

Bustey espied a bank, a long, slow trickle towards his corner and, if it didn’t fall, Corey would be left safe.

At a snail’s pace, the orb slowly rolled, and rolled, and rolled. Francisco, animate now, talking to it, “Come, come,” coaxing it along until, on its last revolution, it finally dropped.

The arena was a madhouse. Screams, and yells, and a’hollerin’ roar to the rafters. Deuel, devastated, yet graciously accepted Bustey’s high-five.

Thank you Accu-Stats. This one’s a keeper.

After the $12,000 check presentation, Bustey was immediately rushed to a 9-Ball match with Shawn Murphy. No rest for the victorious. That’s the Derby.

DIAMOND DCC 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

407 entrants; Another attendance record broken!

Race to 9. 3 balls, minus those pocketed, must make the kitchen on the break.

$16,000, $8,000, $3950.

The Accu-Rack is in use.

47 exhausted combatants are left. 10 have buybacks: Lee Vann Corteza, Chris Melling, Maksim Dudanets, James Aranas, Josh Roberts, Sky Woodward, Danny Olsen, Kevin Cheng, Tim De Ruyter, and Dennis Orcollo.

With his One-Pocket win, Bustamante leapt into the lead. Billy Thorpe, Omar Al Shaheen, Deuel, Orcollo, and Woodward are hot on the trail.

Earlier in the event, Francisco, had been beaten by Mika. To maintain his Master of the Table points, at all costs, Bustey must protect that life. One ball at a time, one ball at a time.

Johnny Archer, after feeding Fedor Gorst to the buyback booth, fell afoul of the Nederland’s Marc Bijsterbosch. He was later eliminated by Billy Thorpe.

The-19-year old, Fedor Gorst had a 6-0 intimidating lead over Banks Champ Billy Thorpe. Billy adopting full combat mode, battled back to tie. But, to no avail. Fedor advanced.

Jung-Lin Chang ran into Neils Feijen in fine form, too fine a form. Then, the jousting Josh Roberts put the BIG Foot 10-Ball Champ out of his misery.

Bobby Hunter had an interesting encounter with Tony Chohan. Fresh from One Pocket, Tony hadn’t quite found his 9-Ball stroke and was missing makeable balls.

Bobby put a 3 pack on him. Tony, despondent, disinterested, unscrewed his shaft and muttering that he had better things to do, places to go, people to see, left the arena. Bobby moved on.

Mike Dechaine put Alex Pagulayan in the one loss division.

Jayson Shaw, still strong, faced Joshua Filler. Down 4-6, Shaw broke and ran out the set. Shaw’s onslaught continued through Marek Kudlik and Alex Olinger.

Poland’s best, Konrad Juszczyszyn, down 5-7, showed Shane he’s no slouch. When ahead 8-7, and breaking, Shane didn’t get out.

Konrad, manifesting the pattern skills that had won him the 2017 American Straight Pool Championship, was fazed as they fought for control of the cue-ball.

Shane, not quite as sharp as usual–it’s day 8 remember–gave Konrad opportunity.  Maintaining the poise of a champion Konrad had SVB fedexed to the buyback booth.

You can be sure of one thing, Shane will get some sleep tonight. Like all true professional athletes, he is driven to win.

Much more to come.

THE DCC Friday Night BANKS RING GAME

The most boisterous Bank Pool Party on earth attracted Billy Thorpe, Skyler Woodward, Shane Van Boening, Jayson Shaw, Neal Jacobs and Mike Delawder in the winner-take-all funfest.

Warming up at 50 bucks a ball, not so surprisingly, Delawder then Jacobs were the soon to falter. Surprisingly, SVB was next to go bust.

Skyler strung enough to leave Shaw, ALL IN, with a lonely c-note. Sky bounced a few more, and bye, bye Jayson.

He and Billy had garnered $6k apiece. Skyler, still in revenge mode from their Banks encounter, with extraordinary skill, in one inning, ran out the balls ’til Thorpe ran out of cash. All Billy could do was smile.

Sky, on cloud 9, walked away with that wry grin, and the 12 large.

THE DIAMOND STRAIGHT POOL CHALLENGE

The final Draw:

Neils Feijen 125, Joshua Filler 56
Immonen 125, Schmidt 26

Melling vs. Van Boening
Orcollo vs. Corteza

The 6 remaining contenders are finding time between their 9-Ball schedule to finish the 14.1 tournament.

Top seeds through on day one at the Eurotour

Mario He, Skyler Woodward and Shane van Boening

With the Dynamic Billard Leende Open 2018 underway here in Leende Netherlands, there was relief for some top seeds on day one. Austria’s Mario He the current European number one had a great escape in his first-round match today against the Dutchman, Tim De Ruyter. It was a close encounter with the score line level at 6-6 when Mario found an extra gear after a poor shot from De Ruyter and eventually got over the line with a score 9-7.  Chasing Mario in the rankings is Albania’s Eklent Kaci, who, with a decent result here in Leende will overtake Mario to claim first spot on the European rankings. Eklent has laid down his marker here with a routine victory over a Spanish newcomer Juan Antonio Pina 9-6 and now awaits the young Portuguese Samuel Santos at 3pm local time Friday.

The Americans came to town for this stop of the European 9-ball tour and they have a lot to gain here with some decent results. The USA Mosconi cup team is decided from the eight Americans who are here, so the pressure is on for them to perform. Tyler Styer came unstuck when meeting the experienced Karol Skowerski in his first match. Karol, with bags of experience, proved too much to handle for the young American winning in fine style 9-4 and now leaving the American a mountain to climb as he now faces the “Italian Stallion” Fabio Petroni in a must win match on the loser’s side Friday.

Oscar Dominguez is another American with an uphill climb, after losing to Austria’s Maximillian Lechner 8-9 and then winning against Saudi’s Amer Hadi Alderbani in a late match Thursday, he will face Germany’s Ruben Frick in a do or die match at 3pm Friday.

With USA’s Shane Van Boening, Skyler Woodward, Billy Thorpe, Mitch Ellerman and Shane McMinn all through on the winner’s side, there’s still some jockeying for those team places yet.

Corey Deuel will face Poland’s Wiktor Zielinski in a mouth-watering match on Friday at 1:30pm. The up and coming Zielinski will be eager to take down a legend like Corey and has some form of his own as Wiktor already has a Eurotour title under his belt while Corey is visiting the Eurotour for the first time.

Spain’s Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz had Germany’s Joshua Filler all over the place in their first-round match. Filler raced off to a 6-2 lead only to watch as the Spaniard pulled back rack after rack and left Filler sitting on the same 6 racks he already had with the Sanchez winning the match 9-6.

England’s “Granite” Mark Gray could not stop Mohammed-Hassan Baabad from Saudi Arabia inflicting a shock result. Trailing 3-8 against the Saudi, it looked like the “Granite” was showing his namesake and got the score back to 6-8 before a shaky and nervous Baabad, finally finished the rack needed to seal a great victory for himself and the Saudi team here in Leende. Tomorrow the tournament continues with matches from loser's round 1 tomorrow at 09:00 CET.

Friday through Sunday, EPBF will show two feature matches LIVE on the EPBF Facebook page. The complete tournament is shown on kozoom.com for premium pass holders.

The event is hosted by the European Governing Body for Pool, the European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) and organised by International Billiard Promotion (IBP).  Play starts Thursday at 09:00 local time, for further information and reference please go to the federation website www.epbf.com under the Eurotour tab. Treviso Open – Unheralded Alammar squeaks past Sniegocki

Left to right: A. Alammar, A. Ouschan & D. Corrieri

A totally unheralded player, Abdulrahman Alammar (KSA) squeaked past #17 ranked player Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) with 9:8 after a tremendous comeback.

It was not the first opponent from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia today for Sniegocki. In his first match he already met Hassan Alqahtani who also made the long trip from the middle eastern country to come to Italy and challenge the European pool elite. In that match, Sniegocki was already warned since he had a 5:2 lead over Alqahtani and just made it over the finish line, taking the match by a whisker with 9:8. Then he met Alammar, Alqahtani’s teammate. One more time, Sniegocki looked like the sure winner, leading 6:2 after eight racks. But Alammar demonstrated high class pool and really surprised the audience on site and at the computer screens since the match was streamed live on facebook as well. Alammar pulled back rack after rack from Sniegocki and made the match exciting again. He even managed to get on the hill first, taking an 8:7 lead over the Polish. Then, Sniegocki levelled that at 8:8 with a combination shot 5-9 into the corner pocket. Now the pressure was on for both opponents with Alammar’s break shot coming up. He broke the rack and had two balls down but no shot on the 2-ball which was the ball on. A safety exchange followed with Alammar committing a foul shot giving ball in hand to Sniegocki. The layout on the table was everything else but easy with the 3-ball behind hidden behind the 4-ball. Sniegocki tried to play a weird position for the 3-ball and failed. All he could do then was leaving a tough shot for Alammar. The player from Saudi Arabia executed a brilliant safety shot on the 3-ball, opening the problem and hiding the cue ball frozen behind the 8-ball on the other end of the table. Sniegocki attempted a bank shot on the 3-ball but completely missed it. With ball in hand, Alammar went on and ran the rack, winning the match 9:8 after a furious comeback. He will now face Tim De Ruyter (NED) who defeated Sebastian Staab (GER) 9:3, in the winner’s qualification round while Sniegocki needs to take the detour over the loser’s side.

Other remarkable results from today include local hero Daniele Corrieri (ITA) taking the cake 9:8 against former World 9-Ball Champion Daryl Peach (GBR) in the same round. Also in winner’s round 2, Stefan Huber (AUT) totally unexpected smashed Alexander Kazakis (GRE) 9:0! What a bitter doughnut for Kazakis that was! Huber’s fellow countryman Albin Ouschan (AUT) brought his match home in winner’s round, winning 9:8 over Cyriel Ledoux (NED). The Dutch was really unlucky here since he had the break in rack 17. However, he came up dry with no balls down, leaving a shot on the 1-ball for Ouschan. With all his coolness and experience, the Austrian powerhouse cleared the table and took the match even under the highest pressure possible.

Day three saw the beginning of the elimination rounds and players are beginning to find the exit. Reymart Lim sent Daryl Peach home 11-9, Donny Mills did the same to James Blackburn and Brad Shearer scraped past Tim De Ruyter 11-10.

Nick Malai  ruined the day for Jorge Rodriquez 11-7 while Earl Strickland stayed with his hot hand to end the run for Matt Krah and John Schmidt gave no air to Joey Cicero as he took him down 11-3.

The winner’s side of the charts had lots of great matches. Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz first sickened Imran Majid and then did the same to Rodney Morris 11-7. Warren Kiamco had owned the hottest stick in the room until he came up against Alex Pagulayan. Pagulayan had a tough road of it but defeated Kiamco 11-9. Darren Appleton continues his strong play and defeated Mario He 11-5 while Eklant Kaci ruined the milk for Ronnie Alcano 11-7.

Albin Ouschan and Joshua Filler, two EuroTour Champs, went face to face and took it to the wire with Ouschan prevailing 11-10. J.L. Chang took down Chris Melling 11-5 after Melling had beaten Justin Bergman 11-8.

John Morra killed a giant when he won out over Niels Feijen 11-8 and Thorsten Hohmann carried the day over Martin Daigle 11-8. In the most anticipated match of the day Jayson Shaw was down 10-5 to Pin-Yi Ko when his young daughter yelled out “Come on Daddy!” Well, that is some fine inspiration there and Jayson rode it to the bank to win 6 games on the trot to win the match 11-10.Another anticipated match was Billy Thorpe against Fargo #3 James Aranas. Thorpe played an aggressive, gutsy game to take down  Aranas  11-7.

Filler Europe’s first 8-Ball Champion U23

Joshua Filler (GER)

With an impressive 8:2 victory over Samuel Santos (POR), Joshua Filler (GER) just won the 8-ball title at the inaugural Dynamic Billard European Championships for U23 at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands.

The final match was played between Joshua Filler (GER) and Samuel Santos (POR). Filler was definite the player who was regarded as the highest favourite in the field. Santos was not necessarily expected to get this far but due to his premium performance here, he secured his spot in the final match. With victories over Berk Mehmetcik (TNC) 8:4 and Casper Matikainen (FIN) 8:5 he underlined his claim for the title today. On the other hand, Filler took down Georgi Georgiev (BUL) 8:4 and Roberto Bartol (CRO) 8:4 to meet Santos in the title match. In the beginning of the final, it looked as if there was a close competition between the two contestants. After 5 racks the score was 3:2 to Filler but Santos seemed to have a foot in the door still. However, that changed dramatically. Filler simply did not make any mistakes and played ice cold as he is known for. Whenever he was at the table he made the game look so easy since he made no mistakes, being it pocketing balls or playing position for the cue ball. He was always almost perfect for his next position. Consequently, he took the next 6 racks in a row and had Santos only play an insignificant role in the rest of the match. In the end, Filler took the match 8:2 and won the inaugural title undefeated.
